The steam engine is from a plan and kit of materials from Bengs in Germany. It is mostly raw materials with the exception of the trestle and the boiler lid which have been shaped by CNC. However, both parts need some finishing.
The engine is one of Ronald Valentines works of art. A 0.098 cc Rova diesel - a speed racer prototype with schneurle porting. I always like looking at masterpieces like this that I could never hope to make myself.

I always like looking at other ethusiast creations and particularly ones that have been made without the tools that I have. You obviously have a great deal of patience and that is to be admired.

I like the steam engine pictured very much but thought the kit was quite expensive. Then when I looked at the rest of the site and saw the Stuart models at four times the price I pay, i realised that they are machining them ready for assembly which then makes the offerings good value.
I would be interested though if they supplied plans and materials for the little locomotive to build from scratch as it were. It looks a powerful little beast.

Re: Minature Steam
My Dad gave me steam engines when I was a little kid, at least a couple of Christmases. We ran them on Sterno instead of the little white blocks of... whatever it was.

is that HO scale? also where did you find the kit, was it pre-machined and ready for assembly, and how much did it cost?

Re: Minature Steam
uploading a video as type
it is HO scale.
i got it as a "kit" from here
http://www.hielscher-dampfmodelle.de/en/product?info=102&x3aefd=145a112c94b5f81fa4bfa1f163cc92fe&x0500d=ecea22a7cd4c5fa80b577fe35b0e814f
as a kit, you are mostly assembling the body work.... but i wasnt happy with the rest so tore it down to its component pieces.
the assembly on it wasnt bad... but i wasnt happy
it is made from mostly laser cut parts, insert tab A into slot A etc, then twist the tab to lock in place..... i soldered every joint and squared and aligned everything properly.
it now feels a lot more robust and runs much smoother..... might need to rework the crank and add a counterbalance
as far as the body goes... i soldered all of it as well(except the roof, used for access)... then painted in VHT flameproof coating, and finally custom made all the brass railing and steps.
it wasnt cheap... and i have spent quite a few hours on it in the last week or so
cheers

Re: Minature Steam
I have a HO set that I used to set up all over the family room during Christmas. My grandpa worked for Burlington Northern (and Great Northern back in the day before the merger) so of course the locomotives are GN, BN or BNSF. I need to dig all that stuff out one of these days. That steam locomotive would be awesome to have go around that track. I really should look into one.
Re: Minature Steam
my grandfather got into the hobby of model railroading when his doc told him he needed to find a hobby so that he could release some of his stress. He has an HO layout in his basement that be designed and built on his own, he even has a radio scanner that we sometimes use to listen to what the conductors of real trains are talking about and where they are so that we can get some good pictures when we drive along side them on the highway

Re: Minature Steam
it runs on methylated spirits(alcohol)... about 1cc at a time, burns for 4.5-5 minutes
and along with 3-3.5cc of water... you get about 3 minutes running... with about 2 minutes to build up pressure
ian
i looked at that one too.... but couldnt justify the cost...
... but now i have this one running the way i want it too..
cheers
