Cox Engine of The Month
.049 Stationary Engine

.049 Stationary Engine
Here's an interesting one. It's a homemade bottom end using a Cox cylinder with a homemade sub-piston intake system and a full crankshaft. I didn't build it and it's unfinished. I'm thinking of building a stand for it and putting a flywheel on one side.

Re: .049 Stationary Engine
That's an odd one. Does the piston go all the way to the top at TDC? Is there a check valve in that SPI pipe?

Re: .049 Stationary Engine
That would be side port induction like the old Ohlssen .23 had.
The piston skirt blocks and unblocks the port.

Re: .049 Stationary Engine
Here are some more pictures. The builder of this engine didn't finish it so there isn't anything in the intake tube. I suppose he would have used a spraybar from another engine. As was stated, the position of the piston controls the intake. As it approaches TDC it uncoveres the intake port in the cylinder. I got this engine on eBay from somebody who was selling off his deceased uncle's collection or something like that. It was listed with a run-of-the-mill Babe Bee and the picture was very fuzzy so nobody else bid on it. I think I got both engines for like $11.00.

Re: .049 Stationary Engine
What I don't understand is what was the original application? The builder must have had something in mind as I see no reason to run the crank out of both ends.

Positrack! I don't know, but that's a heavy crank assembly for one little piston to spin.

Lol, maybe. Or perhaps a mini generator.

Re: .049 Stationary Engine
Could run just about anything off the drive shaft. I bet it is sized for a standard size.
I don't see any reason it won't run with a spray bar added to it.

Re: .049 Stationary Engine
That'd be cool. Just make sure you have some sort of weight on the shaft... prop or fly wheel.
Re: .049 Stationary Engine
hope to see it run, i like how unique the engine is
