Rubberbands

Rubberbands
I was going to assemble my PT 19 now that I'm done with all the details and wanted to know if #64 bands are sufficient. There are #64 bands made for R/C aircraft that are fuel proof but those seem to be much too stiff and there are standard office type which seem a little more stretchy for use in doubling up on the motor mount. If these are not recommended, what type does everybody use on most of these planes?
By the way, from my other thread I said I was going to go to my LHS and check out what I thought was a Cox Aircobra. It isn't a Cox, it's a WenMac. Military green in color and complete with no missing parts and no damage. I asked but it isn't for sale, only for display.

Re: Rubberbands
#64 are a little big but might work, #32 size rubber bands or smaller would be better.
Re: Rubberbands
Thanks for the info. I'll stop at an office supply store and pick up a box. Yeah Mark, that's the plane. He knows exactly what he has and said if he were to sell it, it wouldn't be that he couldn't ever find one again, but rather that he would pay a much higher price than he originally paid for his.

Re: Rubberbands
The Wen-Mac stuff never brings the money as the Cox stuff does. The early sixties P-39/ P-63 in nice shape does bring more then a typical Wen-Mac. You see them on eBay often, not common, but not rare.
Re: Rubberbands
Not sure about fuel proof bands BG I've never come across them.
The trick is when finished for the day wash them in washing up
Liquid, towel dry them and finally dry with a dusting of talcum powder.
Which will make them like new. Neglect to do this and the rubber
Rots fairly quickly.

Good advice John its these things that are often neglected ( I'm guilty) and the first time you remember is a cold winters morning when your hands are like ice you go to band the wing on and ..... Snap " FU^
Or even worse when you decide to do an inverted loop and they fail ! ...
Even as I'm writing this I'm thinking Phill your a plonker ! Learn from your mistakes.

Re: Rubberbands
Buy'm by the pound bag at Staples, and chuck'm after use. Cheap insurance against them failing. If you do reuse them, stretch them before installing and look a their edges. If they have any cracks along the corners of the edges, throw them away. #32's work great for the PT's fuselage troughs, but will really bunch up around the rudder/elevator pegs. The stringy little ones work best there.
It's also a good idea to keep them in a ziplock bag, and covered to keep the sun from baking them in your fieldbox.

Re: Rubberbands
I tried office rubber bands once and they mostly popped the same day I put them on.
I buy fuel proof #32 bands at my LHS. You can get them on line too. http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXJC76&P=FR
Bernie has them on his list of new products that he plans to stock at Cox International, but I don't know if they're available yet.

Re: Rubberbands
I have a package of SIG rubber bands I bought new in the early 90's. They still work well and I have yet to break one. They seem to thrive when impregnated with castor.
I may have bought a super pkg, but I doubt it.
I actually prefer overcast days as the sun plays tricks with ny eyes and I do not like loosing sight of my plane while it's ripping along.

Re: Rubberbands
Thanks for all the replys. I'll see if I can get fuel proof type at one of the larger HS about twenty minutes from here, if not I'll get some online. Speaking earlier about Airacobras, I aquired a circa 1989-90 tan EZ flyer for cheap and is like new with the motor only run up once and never flown and is in the box with all original assescories. Except for the color it looks to be almost the same as the blue Sureflyer model that I remember some time ago. It's not as valueable but it's still an Airacobra, and who knows in ten years. That makes aquisition number four in the space of one month. What's wrong with me?

Re: Rubberbands
Fyi, doing a little 'research surfing' for my own edification on rubber bands, there does appear to be different quality of rubber bands, apparently the cheaper ones use more synthetic material, are more susceptible to ozone and apparently they smell funny? While Sig and Tower don't make 'fuel proof' rubber bands as such, it sounds like they are a better quality. I've used Sig Rubber bands and they do seem to be good. I just went and grabbed my box of #64 I bought at some office supply store some years ago and dumped them out, theres only 1/2 doz. or so left and ONE of the bands was hard, but the rest seemed fine? Looking closer at the box I noticed 1995 was printed on it?
