Half-A controlline models by Scientific
The Outerzone plans site has just loaded several C/L models designed by Walter Musciano and kitted by Scientific.
A bit of nostalgia for me since the AT-6 was the plane I learned on after quickly sticking my COX CUB. It's long gone now, but I still have the engine.

Hmm, I have a 12" block of balsa that would love to grow up to be a Little Devil. I'll check that out, thanks.andrew wrote:The Outerzone plans site has just loaded several C/L models designed by Walter Musciano and kitted by Scientific.

I have the Cessna and the Piper Cub. The Cessna has never flown. They were certainly neat kits. I wish I knew what I know now when I built them as I could've stripped out at least 3/4 oz or more . Ken

I built an Me-109 in the 60's from their kit. The last inch of the fuse wasn't milled away, and I had to carve off enough balsa to almost build another plane. Were they all like that, or did mine just slip thru QA?
Engine was a Golden Bee: I made a throttle for it by epoxying a piece of 1/4" brass tube to the intake with a 'V' slot in the end. A disc plunger connected to a second spring loaded bellcrank moved inside the tube to throttle the motor. Sort of worked, altho I had trouble keeping the firewall attached to the fuse.

If I ever get around to making that built up Little Devil I'll be looking for advice on hollowing out a log. A couple of years ago I decided to reproduce my old fuel soaked one, but that was about the time I wanted to learn about stunt planes, and I was told at RCG that the Little Devil wouldn't do what I wanted. I don't see why not, maybe give it more wing area.
It's a tiny plane but it ought to be scary with a Killer Bee. The last days of my old one were about the time I learned how to bore Bee venturis etc., and I had one of those cobbled-together engines that for some reason flat out ran. One of the first ones that made me want to resist diving under the table for fear of shrapnel. Loose as a goose and a pain to crank, but once it got going, look out! Unfortunately I hadn't learned much about balancing a plane and that Little Devil was the most uncooperative thing I ever flew. But it wouldn't do a complete loop.

Re: Half-A controlline models by Scientific
Recently I won three Scientific NIB C/L kits at a local R/C club fund raising auction. The Cessna 180 and the Zig Zag Stunter were still in the factory shrink wrap so I 've not seen them yet.The Stuka is NIB but is opened. It has the large knob at the tail as you described and by the tool marks it must have been installed in a lathe to cut the shape. It's pretty cool how they got the gull wings to work with flat sheet balsa. When I get my arms around my new camera I'll post some pics...Steve

I would love to see some pics of the Stuka. I have seen that kit on Ebay several times but could not justify spending the money for it.

Re: Half-A controlline models by Scientific
Several years ago. I bought a bunch of plans from Mr. Musciano. Mostly the ones that I'd built as a kid, with a few extras that I'd always thought about. This is his "Stuka" instruction sheet. Sorry for the hodgepodge nature of the copies...the sheet is larger than some of his others, and I had to section the thing on my scanner.
They have been around a long time. Here they are in some adds from the January 1960 Model Airplane News.

Thanks. I really like the Scientific brand of kits. It looks like they used a similar wing-joint configuration on the Stuka as can be found on some of the Monarch plane kits. The Consolidated Model kits I have seen use dowels, which are sometimes difficult to align. I may have to pick one of these Stuka's up. Thanks again. Andy

Re: Half-A controlline models by Scientific
I've been wanting to build one of Walt Musciano's kits for a while and I heard Black Hawk is going out of business so I got a Fokker DR.1 and I'm gonna try and get a PITT's and a PT-19 before they close down. They make / made some super nice kits and I really like the carved fuselages and they give you a very nice hardware kit with it as well. I plan on powering it with a Black Widow after I finish the list of all my other projects.
Here are couple quick snap shots of the kit.

I have a Scientific Bel-Air kit in really nice shape, in box that I might sell. If interested let me know.

Can you post pics and price? Also is the Bel-Air the plane with the rounded nose and oval shaped fin and rudder? And is it complete?cribbs74 wrote:I have a Scientific Bel-Air kit in really nice shape, in box that I might sell. If interested let me know.

Complete? Very. I'll PM you pics. Price say $55 shipped to your door. It has an aluminum cowl and a 2 piece hollow airfoil wing.

Ok, no problem. If it's too pricey shoot me a PM and we can work something out.
