New butane soldering torch

New butane soldering torch
Just received an on-line purchase of a Weller Professional P2KC butane, self-lighting soldering set. It fuels off a common butane cartridge and what a wonderful and versitile tool it is with a hot knife, hot blow deflector, mini-blow torch and hot air deflector all included in a nice plastic carrying case.
A portable, self-contained soldering tool. I got mine from www.Test Equipment Depot.com for $62 freight included. I should have gotten one of these YEARS ago!
The temperature adjustment will solder up to 1,076F (580C)!

29 reads and no responses? Strange for a hobby that involves lots of soldering.
No more extension cords and will fit in your pocket. YIPEE!

Ever since the accident, they don't let me have sharp stuff or things that get hot.

Re: New butane soldering torch
Dave,
Being in an electronics based job I actually solder quite a bit. I have used butane pen type solder irons before. They work well in closed environments, but outside fighting wind, snow, rain they don't work so great. I still like the old Weller guns as they stay hot in all types of weather and never need a refill. I imagine in the hobby world a butane torch comes into it's own. Sounds like a good buy and a useful tool to have.

Ron:
Your observation about soldering tools is spot on.
For hobby soldering, usually indoors, I find the Weller Portasol P2KC superior to any electric unit. It fuels off a standard butane cartridge such as used in Asian cooking. We got some on sale at an Asian food market for a buck each.
Simple, quick, range of temperature and functions....................................

Re: New butane soldering torch
I have used butane soldering torches in the past. They work great indoors and only on open areas. If you are working on something with a lot of wires around you end up melting insulation real easy if your not careful.
I like my Metcal MX-500 solder station. Has a wide range of tips for SMT and large wire soldering. Although not portable this is always my favorite iron to use. Tips heat up iin 10 seconds.

Truth should be known.
I tried out our son's Weller P2KC Weller soldering torch before I got one myself. I very rarely buy a new tool without trying it first. I knew exactly how it would work for me.

Re: New butane soldering torch
Bought me a Hakko 888 soldering station awhile back and tossed all the old pencil irons i used. Wont look back to anything else. It spoils you horribly.
I made a long reach soldering tip for my Blazer butane torch, for in the field repairs if needed.
In a pinch, superglue can be used to solder wires together. Twisted tightly then put a few drops on. Not ideal, but it does work

Re: New butane soldering torch
The portability of my butuane is just another one of it's great features.
Working from a step ladder, yesterday I used it to do some running light repair on our Mini-Winnie motorhome. Try that with corded soldering iron.

Re: New butane soldering torch
Sounds cool Dave. I just picked up a pencil torch that runs off propane. It probably won't last long, as it only cost $3.
A $2 propane cylinder is supposed to last a while with these.

Matt:
In typical SD fashion I did you one better.
I got six-pack of butane cylinders on sale at an Asian food market for $6. They're the size of a standard can of spray paint.
