Re: Teaching CL
On the other hand when you go from 1/2A UP to a big plane TRAINER that lumbers along on really long lines you will remark to yourself by saying, "man, this is soo easy". Because the speed and handeling difference is so great compared to a zinging 1/2A.

I would like to try something with a .35 in it someday. I am enjoying my backyard flying as it stands and 35-40ft is my line limit. So 1/2A it is!!!

The bigger planes are a lot of fun. Sound of a un-muffled 35 screaming around is awesome. The line tension makes my arm tired but that can be fixed with some muscle.

I'd like to try it too, but my shoulders wouldn't stand for it. On youtube I saw a big guy leaning back holding on to a big plane with both hands. I think I'll stick with the 1/2A. Somehow it makes me proud that I can keep them in the air and manage to do some tricks without totaling it. The only one that has seriously challenged me lately is the BFStreak.

Re: Teaching CL
That guy had a huge Flight Streak with a 1.08 Four Stroke. Most planes do not have that much pull. I lean back with the .35 sized ones but I am small. I weigh 105 lbs. Rather light for my age. Average weight person would be fine.

Yeah, I gotcha beat at 125 pounds and arthritis. But I will no doubt move up to an .09 sized plane because, well... I have a Tee Dee .09.

Re: Teaching CL
Lol. Yep, you got me beat. Last time I was at the Doc they told me to gain 15 lbs. I am apparently in the bottom 11% weight wise for teens my age. But because I never had to carry excess weight I gained very little muscle. 80 lbs and my legs will give out. I often have my father use tools for me. My fingertips are sensitive and they tend to hurt.
A problem I seem to have with big CL plane is keeping a hold of the handle. I have tiny hands and have a hard time grabbing the handle. I can wrap my fingers around it but have difficulty getting a good grip. My middle finger is 2.5 inches long. My pinkie/thumb are around 2 inches (going on the thumb ending right where it attaches to hand). It is very nice though to be able to stick my hand through holes in firewalls to add blind nuts or route fuel tubing. I actually had a friend compare me to a guy on a Burger King commercial.

I lost all of my mass to medical adventures but still pretty strong. I can still give a crushing handshake to any jerk who challenges me.
My fingers stick out too far and get caught in the up line whenever I do an outside loop. I did one with the BFS and when the plane got back to the top of the loop, the up line was wrapped around my finger and it instantly snapped into an unexpected inside loop. I got loose in time to finish the loop and continue flying to oohs and ahhs from the crowd of amazed spectators, Matt, his Dad and my wife.

Re: Teaching CL
I am very big into good handshakes. I have to make my knuckles whit to get a good one. A lot of force for me. Normal for others. Then again, my hands are almost always white. They get cold very easily. For most of winter I have little feeling in them. Gloves are a must for me.
I have never had the lines tangle on my hands. I had tall weeds grab lines before.

Hahaha! neat trick!
To this end, I just picked up a original NIB a CG Shoestring Stunter for my McCoy Redhead .19. Might give it a try once I am done building. Me and my knees will have to have a conversation first.

Yep! You could even go as far as lighting a half chewed stogie with your new CEF Zippo. To keep in theme from the movie you have to mutter barely audible words about how CL is a cruel mistress.

Re: Teaching CL
July last year I did an extended exhibition for my sister and her entourage and everything felt fine. The next morning my hip was out. I'm talking, can't freakin walk. In a couple of days it was fine, like it never happened.cribbs74 wrote:You will be having so much fun you will trick your mind into thinking that there is no pain! Until your done that is...

That was probably Dan Banjock with his 2X Flite Streak. He only made it for exhibition purposes. He has had various engines in it, all of them too big for CL use at contests. People like to see it fly. I believe he uses throttles on the engines so he can slow it down during mid-flight and give his arms a rest.
BTW, Dan is an excellent CL stunt flyer and does well...with normal planes...at contests.

Re: Teaching CL
A couple of comments:
I assume you realize that the engine was running so rich it could barely stay in the air so the guy's mother could learn to fly. Both the Fox .35 and the Shoestring fly MUCH better than that.
Also, if you have never been to a Brodak Fly In, it is almost a week long in John Brodak's back yard. It is the largest meet in the Nation I believe. Although it is a contest, it is low key with an emphasis on fun.
Anyone may attend. It is in Carmichaels, PA in the Fathers Day time frame. Info at brodak, com.

Yeah you can tell it's running rich. I think the guy doing the vid even says something about the engine 4 cycling. It does start to lean out a bit near the end.
I would love to go to the fly in except OKC to PA is not exactly a day trip.
