Today was set to be TeeDee carb shoot out day/ Windy no flying, Pop concert at Olympic venue a mile away
meant all neighbours have gone into hiding BUT
Instead of bolting down the engine like I ALWAYS do, I used self tappers cos it was quicker.
Got the 051 sorted needlewise, pinched the tube to stop her,, went and got tacho as I was going to use the 051 in standard form as a 'control'.
Fired her up again, she screamed right round to (who knows) more than 20k? Then the screws all decided they'd rather
be somewhere else.
I was lucky! The engine flew across my hand and ended up about 30 yards on other side of garden
Good job no one else was around.
To conclude I'm gonne buy a mount off Bernie, do the shootout another day and brighten my day with beer.

John, I hate to see this and hurts like #$%%. I refuse to take this advice myself but have been doing it more. Wear a glove. I see engines being shown with the tach inches away from the prop directly in front of the prop. Tach from behind the prop. A engine coming loose is a recipe for disaster anyhow and it could happen even on the correct stand. It just seems that the little ones hurt just as much as the big ones do. Ken

These little engines have been hard on your hands lately. At least there is beer to help make things better. Mend quickly.

You were very lucky! I saw a diesel .15 fly out of a test stand many years ago, while the owner was standing directly in front of it, the prop/engine hit him in a VERY sensitive spot! Luckily no cuts (thick trousers!) but I learned some new swearwords that day, and was treated to a demonstration of dancing while bent double and clutching one's self!

Being just a little pedantic, that (above) to the power of 4 is still ONE . Where are all the "Mathematical Equation Guys."?John Goddard wrote:Mathematical Equation Guys..

Apparently, applied to the "Power of Restraint", and considering the resulting incident, it didn't even have THAT much power !!!!

That's a nice war wound John,,be proud. You have officially earned your stripes,,
My single stripe,,courtesy of Gmark .061
I was at a pylon race and watched a quickie 500 climb right up a guys forearm,,,sliced deli meat. He was carted off with a coat and bangage wrapped around his arm,,soaked and leaking.
For all the new guys(and old) just getting started,,these are good things to remember. If you don't take heed and think about things,,you could end up missing some digits.
If you make motor mount screw holes with self tappers into hobby wood, make sure to dribble some super thin super glue down the hole after self tapping,,this strengthens threads so there is less chance that the motor will pull out of the wood while running and after the wood gets fuel soaked.

Re: Self Tappers Not big and not clever
A tee Dee can work screws out faster than anything I ever saw. We barely stopped Microflitedude's .051 before it raided the shop with a Topflite 5.25x4 one day. We were trying to tach it too. His little brother was standing close by watching too. Their Dad would have killed us if we'd chopped him up. They're especially bad about loosening the screws with an unbalanced prop. Your hand hurts me to just look at.
Speaking of balance, I can not, after several tries, can not balance those yellow props' hubs. I sat in front of the balancer yesterday and packed the holes behind the light side of the hub with ca and baking soda, put a drop of ca and soda on the light side, carved the heavy side and dropped it into the trash can after I deemed it dangerous. And then did the same with another one, and another one. No wonder they're free. Save them for anemic old Babe Bees if you dare use them for anything. The black ones are difficult too. I never worried about balance before I got into speed engines and a BW wallowed out the holes in a firewall. And saw the radical RPM difference between two identical props, one balanced and the other not. I've switched to Master Airscrew 6x3's and cut them down to 5.5 and 5 inches. They are almost perfectly balanced out of the bag. I also epoxy the screws into the firewalls now. I have to heat them with a soldering iron to unscrew them.
Sorry for the semi-hijack. I had I had to unload.

Nice one John!
I agree with Rusty. TD's will come free in a hurry if the proper hardware is not used. The best thing to use is through bolts with lock nuts. For some added security a drop of CA on the threads does the trick. Makes it a pain to unbolt though.
John, you don't have to actually live by your signature!

Re: Self Tappers Not big and not clever
Solid Info Rusty.
Although I did use it again today I think hence forth the fast stuff will all feature other manufacturers props.
Keeping it real Ron
Hopefully some of the youngsters will take something from this and pay a little heed.
There's no fool like an old fool after all
Finally I did bolt the 'control' up today the result is below.
I guess the escapee yesterday was turning 21+...
The tanked mount holds about 10cc of fuel does 1min 05 secs sound about right or is it just cos it's 4 turns out still?

10cc for 65 seconds at 21.3k sounds about right. That's why I have no desire for a venom or any of those other 8cc tanked super Bees. Though they do slow considerably with a 5.5" prop.

Re: Self Tappers Not big and not clever
Almost bed time guys and let's not even talk about that team the turned up to play the Italians tonight....
But. another casual observation.
I did try to spark up the 051 with a Bernie carb today. I say try cos it was not the easiest task I've ever committed
meself to.
I finally (after half hour or so) got it to run more than a BAAARP but only10 or 12 seconds, not long enough to grab
tacho or camera.
!, It certainly ran fast/not the 'only' 16 or so K I expected, more like 19+/poss I had an air leak/bleed prob which made
it a biatch to start but run fast.
2, Perhaps the cogniscenti already know this but maybe SPI'ed engines don't take well to carbs. Hence the 'Dickeybird'
I'm gonna fire up the old 050 r/c next week just to see what's what but whaddyaallll reckon meantime?

I would say it was a good result, I mean at least it means they won't get hammered by the Germans again this time!
