Lucky 13 Rides Again !!!!
Had another slice of time for the Skunk Works and decided to continue the torture of Bernie's little Hot Rod.
I opened a new bottle of Sig 25% for this run.
I didn't have the 5.7 x 3 APC recommended by Bob, but DID have a balanced Tornado 5 x 3, and stuck it on the engine. I had to replace the supplied prop screw with a socket head with some extra length for the thick hub of the Tornado.
The first burst of it burning out it's prime sent me back in the shop to get my safety glasses! (I know, I ought to have them on in the first place!)
The engine stated VERY quickly, and it's rocket takeoff made me grab the tach to see if it agreed with what my ears were telling me.
The engine blew past 20,000 and settled in the mid 21's. I didn't time it's run, but the tank seemed to last about the length of two deep breaths!
Next, gonna cut down the one APC 6 x 3 prop I found...and then, there's that evil little Yellow Peril that Bernie gave me...
If anyone else runs their Xtreme Engines and would like to post their results here, they'd be welcomed to do so!

Re: Lucky 13 Rides Again !!!!
21.5k is pretty darn good. I get that steady on my Black Widow with 3 shims under the red 5 fin head and an APC 5.5x2 prop. But I have a Bee crankshaft so it could explode at any time. I haven't put it to work yet, but I have a little plane ready for it when I get done messing with the BFS.
John, unless it runs under 21k with a well balanced prop, I wouldn't touch it. APCs are extraordinarily fast. It even spins an APC 6x2 at 20.3k.
With these souped up engines it's balance balance, blades and hub. I cannot balance the hubs on many Cox props.

With the pickup tube at 3:00, my BW runs at its fastest for about 45 seconds. Should translate to nearly 90 seconds in the air.Kim wrote: I didn't time it's run, but the tank seemed to last about the length of two deep breaths!

Yeah, they break when they hit the ground and need a spacer to fit a Cox .049 hub. A bit of a pain. Oh and I think APC stands for "A Painful Cut."mitchg95 wrote:gosh these APC props are mean sharp as a knife lol
But they are extremely easy to balance.

Hey Ron,
Yeah...these RPMs are somewhat scary for a guy who's used to calling .049s in their upper teens "Fast" !!!
The prop is Bernie's 4.5 X 4 : http://coxengines.ca/propellers/

Re: Lucky 13 Rides Again !!!!
It occurs to me that since Lucky 13 has ALREADY proven it's stuff, any more messing with props and fuels would be somewhat redundant.
SO...rather than have it apply more thrust to a slab of plywood, it's taken the place of the Black Widow in "Big Otto". I figure 40 feet of Spider Wire ought to keep it from twisting me into the ground !

I've been using the braided 15 lb test for my 1/2A's for a couple of years now. It is very thin and loves to tangle, but doesn't have the drag of dacron and doesn't stretch.
I've seen suggestions to buy the bright yellow version, but my Walmart only has it in moss green, so I've got to be careful not to stomp it on my way out to the handle.

Re: Lucky 13 Rides Again !!!!
I use 30# test Spyderwire. 15# is certainly strong enough, but a tangle will ruin a flying day so I stick with the thick stuff. I too am stuck with the green line. I got it tangled around my ankles today when I was switching planes. Had to sit down and unwrap it from both ankles and liberate it from my shoe laces. I looked like a total dufus but luckily my videographer was kind enough to ignore it. I wish I could find yellow or orange. I don't have any trouble with drag as far as I can tell. I need to re-rig my handle because my clips are starting to fall apart. One clip was half un-clipped today after landing the Li'l Satan.

Hey John, I missed this post on Friday. Which "Rusty Options" were you considering for your Xtreme? (He asks with an air of both curiosity and apprehension)

I've got some 30 lb that I'm going to use along with the 15. I've messed with the 15 lb stuff long enough now that I can mostly avoid tangles, but when it goes, it goes big time!
Are you using fishing clips or the dedicated ones for Control Line? I've got some that have been run hard for years but are still hanging in there.
Since we're talking abut Spiderwire, does anyone have thoughts on how it'd work for larger models...say...in the .09 to .15 size range? I'd like to see my Sportsman and Medallion .15's on an Acromaster of other planes of that size.

Thanks! I guess I ought to quit being lazy, and get some, along with my "camouflaged" inventory !!! It IS a few bucks more, but 300 yards will make quite a few sets of lines !!

Mostly the polishing of the innards and piston cropping Kim
Search 'Rebuilding a Black Widow, mouse racer style'
for the Rustmeisters comprehensive 'how to'.

Thanks John...will do! I'm not sure, however if I'll employ any of those options, as I'm already kinda scared of 'Bernie's Little Monster' !!!
I do hope you'll post your results here or on a new thread if you decide to do some work on yours !

Re: Lucky 13 Rides Again !!!!
I appreciate the confidence in my work, from which I took many the ideas from Paul Gibeault's article. But I would break it in and see how it behaves first. There's always the chance of getting a new one with the magical combination of fits and balances that make it a jewel in the rough, out performing it's own spec sheet.Kim wrote:John Goddard wrote:Kim wrote:John Goddard wrote:Cometh the Postman Kim
