Baby Ringmaster to fly soon
The kit from Brodak has now arrived and has been completed to the point of covering and finishing. With a 21" span built-up wing with a beam-mounted TD .051 up front on 35 foot lines it should be an excellent performer in the CL circle.
At $35 it is a good value for the money as it features the hardware and lead-out packages needed to complete the model. Full-sized plans, an instruction manual, silkspan covering materiral as well as a CL beginner's guide are also included. The parts are lazer rather than die-cut.
Ringmasters of varying sizes have been popular since the early 50's when Matt Katana designed them and there is no doubt that they are among the all-time classics of CL. The "Baby" is fully aerobatic in experienced hands or would be suitable as an introductory plane for the beginner at a modest price.

Re: Baby Ringmaster to fly soon
This "Baby Ring" will be old-school all the way.
I'm even using "Sigment" and epoxy for adhesives as well as Brodak butyrate dope for the finish.
One you read, understand and apply Brodak's instructions, butyrate finishes aren't that big a deal. People are initially put off by the expense of the components required: butyrate, thinner, retarder etc. and don't understand the proportions need.
Buy in the quart or better sizes and the price goes down considerably.

Sure, but first I have to practice spinning around in circles because it's been quite some time since I've flown CL. I've never flown CL while sitting on my butt.

Practice standing up and go round and round. Get a fixed item in line of sight and focus on it. Makes spinning less intense. Go slow at first, then take brief break. I have no problem with inverted / inside/outside and all the rest. I don't give a hoot about contest work as I fly for me and do my own thing.

Re: Baby Ringmaster to fly soon
I recommend doing some of the spinning looking up high as well as straight out. Up high seems to throw me off worse when I'm out of practice. And I fly higher when out of practice, especially after a reversal of direction when my hand control is a little clunky.
Yes we want pics and vids.

Re: Baby Ringmaster to fly soon
Update:
The "Baby Ring" has now reached point of covering. I have trial fit the engine, fuel tank, landing gear, wing, wheels, stab/elevator, rudder, bellcrank, control rod, lead outs, elevator horn using a small square to achieve alignment and smooth functioning.
I'll need to temporarilly remove some of those parts in the finishing process when I appy, you guessed it, a Brodak red and white butyrate dope finish.
Will be using a TD .051 with a 1/3 ounce wedge tank and a 6"X3" gray Cox prop flying on 35 foot lines.
More to follow soon.

Re: Baby Ringmaster to fly soon
Dave, you may want to use bigger tank. TD 's drink fuel pretty good. Just a thought.

Dan:
I fitted the 3 ounce tank because it's physical size was better suited to the space available on the BR fuse.
