'Tweeners...
Between the wars, that is. This period saw the biplane reach its ultimate stage of development, and its subsequent replacement by the monoplane. Scientific kitted 2 biplanes representative of this era, the Army Curtiss P6E, and the Navy Boeing F4B-4. I was fortunate enough to be able to borrow both of these kits for the purpose of scanning & copying.
I love this claim! I wouldn't call any of the parts in this kit 'finished', and I certainly don't know how you could build it without tools.
After documenting the kit contents, I decided this was a perfect opportunity for a dual clone build. For better scale accuracy, I supplemented the kit plans with the William Wylam drawings for both planes.
The cowl ring for the F4B-4. A 1/64” ply ring with 2 layers of cross-grain 1/16” balsa, sanded to section.

Re: 'Tweeners...
I love this post Duane. Do you have a picture of the original boxed components?
Your clone looks like it has a laminated fuselage with a hollow center, does that duplicate the original? I love those colorful Scientific boxes, and the airplanes of that era. There is a vintage B/W movie that plays occasionally on TCM that features the F4B flying in formation with some pretty fantastic photography.
There is a market for old balsa kits, but bring your wallet.

Very cool Duane! Biplanes have ALWAYS been some of my favorite aircraft.. and those two kits would have certainly appealed to me. Both designs having short nose-moments.. you might want to source some heavier main wheels to help the models balance. Heavy hub-nuts can help with that too.. (that is.. if you plan to fly them.. )

Re: 'Tweeners...
Both of these are typical Scientific construction, hollow log fuse, solid balsa wings. My clones are the same, except I glued up the log from smaller pieces. This is the only pic I have of the kit contents. Notice that work was started on the fuse sometime in the past. These kits are now some 70 years old, it's hard to find one that is truly NIB.

Boeing F4B-4
Full disclosure – I started with the intent to do build logs on these, but as usual soon failed to take pictures. I've been tinkering on them off & on for a few months, and both are now finished.
So without further ado, here is a walk-around of the Boeing F4B-4.
The dummy cylinders are short sections of dowel. I didn't have room to fit a spring starter, so will use the electric finger.

@duaneh , both bipes are eye candy, you did a really nice job on both.
The builder is usually his worst critic. I see otherwise, these are rarely modelled today, and your attention to scale details really stand out.

Thanks for posting that picture Duane. Time and people take their toll on these vintage kits but a picture freezes the moment forever.
There is a large market for vintage kits on-line and it doesn't seem to be slowing. This one interests me.

Beautiful job as usual on the F4B and the Curtis P-6.

Oh wow you have done a Steller job of building those biplane war birds , I like the yellow and decals of the stars with the sweeping strips
The tiger strip wheel pants look good from my house I know your probably thinking well i did them twice LOL I love the way your making these hollow logs come to life with the 2 halves made and put together as if it always was 1 .. my Dad use to fly some of the old hollow logs can't remember the name sure it was some of Walt's planes did a little dog fighting in the ball park Long time ago got me into it with the Stuntman 23 ... Ahh the good ole days
Are you going to fly them or display for a bit ?
