.010 TeeDee Tiny Speeder
After I finally got a 010, I was able to test it successfully. However, the model felt a bit too slow for the high-revving engine.
So today I decided to build a speeder like I did for the 020.
A linear servo is installed as the elevator servo, there is no more room. At least nothing that was lying around.
I still have to make the linkages before the first flight can take place.
I'm a little worried whether the little thing will actually fly.
I would be happy to receive name suggestions!
Does anyone have experience with other propellers for the 010?
The original ones appear more fragile than those for the larger engines. And maybe that would add a little more speed.

Re: .010 TeeDee Tiny Speeder
Beautiful plane, Tobaiies. I guess it is your own design?
I had the same cold feet before maidening my Lil SpeeDee010 and it worked out so good that today this is one of my go-to planes for fun flys..
And yes the stock COX props are indeed very fragile, especially the grey one which is also a tad heavier than the black one.
Can you please show what battery you have selected, and what brand the linear servo is?
Looking forward to your video.

Re: .010 TeeDee Tiny Speeder
Thanks guys!
I'll see if I can get another propeller like that.
Its a similar design to the larger ones, pretty simple. The servo is from an Eflite UMX model, but I don't know which one exactly. The battery I use for testing is the same as usual, 1S 260mAh. The model has a wingspan of 40cm and weighs approx. 58g.

Thanks Tobaiies, sorry but I am still not sure about your battery..a 1s Lithium battery provides only 3.7 Volts if I am not mistaken..is that enough for the servos and the receiver? The receiver and servos I use need higher voltage than that..

Re: .010 TeeDee Tiny Speeder
Exactly, the nominal voltage is 3.7 volts. Fully charged 4.2 volts. I think most LV servos work like this, of course not extremely fast, but it's not necessary The receiver officially also works down to 3.7 volts. I also have telemetry through the receiver, so I can always keep an eye on the voltage. but also change it regularly.balogh wrote:Thanks Tobaiies, sorry but I am still not sure about your battery..a 1s Lithium battery provides only 3.7 Volts if I am not mistaken..is that enough for the servos and the receiver? Ready for Maiden
I have now finished the linkage.
I adjusted the ailerons a bit and made them larger. The original ones were so thin that I couldn't fix the control horn properly
Had to change the aileron servo too... The cheap little one wasn't reset accurate at all.
Luckily I found one that fits exactly into the existing cutout, but it's extremely tight in the fuselage.
And thanks for the propeller recommendation, I found a dealer and ordered straight away. Looks great!
I plotted a few stickers too
I maiden the model tomorrow, at least I hope so

Re: .010 TeeDee Tiny Speeder
Nice, look forward to seeing this one fly!
The HQ T3x2 will get you a nice jump in speed.
.75 extra pitch adds up at over 34k unloaded rpm.
Stock prop has gone 41,985 rpm unloaded down wind.
What is the all up weight less fuel?
I found surface throws to be very minimal over 100mph
about 1.3 mm full deflection with outboard ailerons.
Elevator about 1.7 mm as I recall, absolute micro speed.

Brad, what is the static rpm with the HQ 3x2 prop? Does the 2 inch pitch slow it down to below the 1.25 inch?
My other concern is the IC engine throwing the blade of electric props..I had my TD020 throw one of the 3 blades mid-air then the hub exploded and the whole prop was thrown...how does the HQ 3x2 prop tolerate the TD010 cyclic shaft load?

Re: .010 TeeDee Tiny Speeder
The RTF weight is now 59.6 grams. The new servo is about 2 grams heavier.
With the 020 I often fly a 4*3 propeller, it is very delicate and extremely thin. Sometimes I worry a bit, but the HQ 3*2 seems very robust.

Re: .010 TeeDee Tiny Speeder
That weight is amazing..as is your bravery to fly on a 3.7V receiver battery.. I have 170mAh NiMh batteries charged to about 5.5V and I am too shy to fly more than 3 runs each about 7-8 minutes long before I recharge it. I lost 1 or 2 planes due to low RX battery power in the past and it makes me super cautious

Re: .010 TeeDee Tiny Speeder
Weight / size is great it will be fast and challenging!
Will need to take some spare props or use the stock black prop to trim the plane
out, once you have sorted out the throws can then go faster with the 3x2
1S is the way to go with a proper 1S RX and servos for .010 speed. Very small gear / plane.
Takes some getting use to the required careful handling and operation. I have flown indoor the
2 Nano .010 speed projects I have done were quite a thrill and challenge using extreme small gear.
I have flown with a 3x2 drone prop did very well for a mix of thrust / speed.
Just check them for stress at the hub after each landing. I tap threads in the
prop bore to insure best centering. The red color props looks good.
HQ T2.5 x 2 test shows the load is low with a throttle sleeve - bit less load than the stock prop.
The prop is not suitable for top speed - but held up well under static load and
looks proportionally good. Possible for very small low weight throttle projects.
Unloading to 43k is expected given the known data from 3x1.25 @42K
Hobby People: HP 4x4 cut to 2.56 x 4

Re: .010 TeeDee Tiny Speeder
So the first flight was successful!
The flight characteristics are surprisingly good, flying slowly is no problem.
However, after the first flight I noticed that the tank was not tight. I recently ordered new seals and wanted to change them, but now I discovered that the plastic part has a hole or a crack.
Did someone already have this problem? Are these still available to buy somewhere, didn't find anything at Cox International.

Re: .010 TeeDee Tiny Speeder
Good that you have maidened it, congrats! How did the 3x2 prop work out compared to the stock 3x1.25?
Too bad that the tank cover is damaged.Yes it cracks if the screw is overtightened. Some glues may work, but you'd better replace it.
Matt at Exmodelengines still has complete tanks:
http://www.exmodelengines.com/product.php?productid=17830&cat=250&page=1
Or you may try at Mecoa but they are not too responsive to non-US customers:
https://www.mecoa.biz/shopdisplayproducts.asp?id=36
Because of its limited volume that caters only for some 2 minutes or so runtime, I do not use the integral tank, but add an external tank made of small party balloons on my 010 size -and practically all , up to 09 size - planes.
The stock tank is abt 3 ccm in volume. I use an external rubber balloon tank that carries up to 15 ccm fuel on board. I like long flights.

Re: .010 TeeDee Tiny Speeder
Glad to hear the plane flew out it's trim flight, did you snag some vid?
The plane design does well with stable tracking, grooves along where it is pointed.
Can fabricate a backplate out of carbon plate or aluminum.
Can use epoxy and simply permanently seal it until a replacement tank assembly has arrived in the mail.
Crush or sawcut the old tank when its time to expose the crank case bolts.
Fresh plastic .010 backplate / tank plenty in stock: US $18.99

Re: .010 TeeDee Tiny Speeder
Thank you! I will order this tank…. Does anyone have the Cox International aluminum tank?
I have now made a back plate out of carbon fiber.
I hope I can fly again today, I made a video of the first flight yesterday and will upload the video to YouTube this evening. Maybe something will be added from today. In the short time that the engine was revving up, the HQ 3*2 made a good impression!

Re: .010 TeeDee Tiny Speeder
Ok great, look forward to seeing the project fly.
Carbon backplate looks good, thickness is suitable no apparent flex from the mounting screw.
I have the aluminum .010 tank tested,
For my use it is too heavy / bulky for all out speed with wide mounted side tabs.
Requires a larger firewall creating too much drag given the tested level of speed
obtained with 2P, 3P and 4P props to date with the 2 Nano plane versions.
.010 aluminum tank tested with a Gemfan Carbon 3x3 prop,
great robust tank for bench testing props and flying sport projects.
3030 carbon prop is stiff and does not cause prop oscillation aka rpm loss.
The top of the leading edge was reworked via fine files and sandpaper to create
faster airspeed over the top of the blade.
Testing new CNC fuel tank Carbon 3x3 Prop / Best Noted Peak 33,107 rpm
More typical 32k rpm / 91 mph pitch speed / 3.6oz thrust
.058hp / 43.3w / tank duration 2.57 mins. due to 35% nitro / 20% oil.

Short video from maiden.
Yesterday morning I didn't have time to get the Lil Fury ready. I flew larger models because it was one of the last nice days.
So just the video of the first flight. The engine wasn't running perfectly yet and, as you can see, I had to trim it first.
The tank is now sealed and remounted on the model.

Re: .010 TeeDee Tiny Speeder
Congratulations..
Thanks to its slender low-drag design and light weight, your plane is already very fast even with the air/fuel mixture a bit on the rich side, and I expect this will be a ball to fly when the needle valve is well set.
Unfortunately the carb body of all 010-s is pure aluminum with no steel insert (unlike e.g. the 049 TeeDee-s), so the aluminum valve threads tend to quickly wear loose due to engine vibration, inadvertantly self-set the NV position mid-air, and allow false air to enter the carb. (The 020 TeeDee is the same and I am facing air leakage and NV setting issues with one of my 020-s)
As a precaution, I add the silicon tube to the NV even for brand new 010 engines and carburetors, to help set and stabilize the peak rpm ..

Re: .010 TeeDee Tiny Speeder
Nice, the lower power rpm allowed a trim flight without it becoming a handful!
Happy to see the glide ratio is on par with the design attributes. You are on the cusp of true micro IC
speed far beyond the typical RC projects with the 3x1.25 prop! Even with low rpm it was cutting through
the air with little effort. Yes on the fuel tube fix for the needle valve and good to hear the plane is ready.
Thank you for sharing!
