Re: R/C airboats
Yup, those layers can load it up and make it heavy if you don't sand like a maniac. And yes, you can over sand thru the wood and make it absolutely paper thin,,(grrrrrr).
On the next one with mahogany wood in the kit and just going for a smooth painted finish, I am gonna ditch the mahogany and trace the pieces out of craft plywood. Will save ALOT of frustration. Believe me, believe us who have been tortured,,lol.
It's really beautiful wood when it is done right in it's natural finish, but it can be a frustrating road to get there.

Re: R/C airboats
ackurly i built an lil hydroplane boat (cox TD 051 powered) awhile back it was friggin fast i dont have it any more (i traded it last year) but i still have my plans/drawings for it
it was no air boat tho but rear surface prop drive...i always wondered what it would be like with a tuned pipe on it

Re: R/C airboats
UPDATE:
I bought a 3 blade pusher prop, a set of Phenolic thrust washers, and a couple socket head prop bolts from Bernie.
I put a non-RC muffler with pipe on the engine, and replaced the Traxxas 27mhz RX with a 2.4ghz OrangeRX.
Where the servo used to be, I'm going to paint some thinned epoxy.

Re: R/C airboats
yeah it was fast in a straight line alright but i think what i learnt of that design i can do improvements
i was offerd good money so why not ...i intended to build anouther with improvements any hows as for the engine i have several Tee Dee 0.51 with a spare head (car heatsink) and prop shaft so a remake mite be closer than you think

let me know if you need a car engine heatsink. i have at least 4 from a purchase of 5 car engines from the "lost" engines thru phastmotors. they sat in a warehouse for 15 years and were unused. 3 of the 5 engines look brand new. 2 of the star brass reeds look new. 2 cylinders have minor scratches and one has some sort of incomplete black oxidizing, (grey in color in spots). red KB backplates, etc.
keep in touch mate. happydad

Re: R/C airboats
Glued the rudder back together, and insulated the fuel tank with foam.
I'm thinking about cutting a small notch in the hatch for the charge lead to come through.

What size is you battery pack Matt?. Is it the 4 AA plastic battery holder that comes standard with most radios?.

It's a 4.8v 700mah Nicad.
Re: R/C airboats
Providing your servo and linkages are set up correctly and the battery is in decent condition, you can run for quite awhile before needing a recharge Matt with that 700 mah. You are running 1 servo with not a terrific load on it per say.
Like we posted about before, it would be better to have that charge lead down in the radio compartment.
If you feel confident in being able to waterproof up the charge lead protruding from the hatch cover, go for it. Keep it short,,1 inch, maybe 2 protruding. Enough to get your fingers on it to attach the charge lead from the charger, and then enough slack underneath to pull the hatch with wire to spare.

Re: R/C airboats
The main reason I wanted to have it out is so I could use a voltmeter to monitor the battery. There is a small hole where the old antenna used to come through. It might look a little ugly with a cord protruding from the middle of the deck though.
After you lose a plane because of a bad battery, you get kind of paranoid about it.

Ni-Mh battery packs are available in small packages these days. i found 2/3 AA batteries in a 4cell pack, 700mAhr, for less than $4.00 from china of course. 1600mAhr in 4/5 aa packs. if you need help finding them PM me. i have a few of the 2/3AA 700mAhr packs i use for most of my planes and cars.
see 2/3AA battery packs with different connectors.

Re: R/C airboats
Got my stuff from Bernie. Still haven't decided what to do about the charge lead.
I have a Hangar 9 Double Vision box I use to charge my battery, which is a Nicad. I assume I can use this box to charge a NiMh? I also have a wall wart.

that charger should work on most battery types. Ni-Mh batteries do not like to be left on the trickle chargers too long though. as long as the charger shuts off or you watch the total charge time, they last a long time. Ni-Cd tend to die sitting on the shelf. all batteries have their own advantages and disadvantages.
i was suggesting a larger, 1600mAhr, battery since it was a boat and weight shouldn't be a major issue. i use the 700mAhr 2/3AA in my planes small or smaller. lithium batteries for the micro planes. happydad

Re: R/C airboats
from what I found Matt, it will charge a NiMh. I think its NiCad and NiMh only charger. Very vauge on cell chemistry with the supplied instructions on that one.
