Another completion
Since I’m on a completion kick, I thought I’d finish this Akromaster. It is a kit that I bought back in the early-mid 80’s. I can clearly remember walking into the Pinson Hobby Shop, but not the year. I just remember that I was home on leave at the time. I never built it, and it just kinda tagged along through six moves over 30 years. I honestly thought it had been lost in one of the moves, but one day about eight or nine years ago, while digging in the back of the hall closet it just popped up. So I decided to build it with a Cox Medallion .15 engine.
No need for build pics, as it is just your standard Akromaster build. Besides, this was eight or nine years ago and I have no idea where I put the build pics. I covered the plane with blue Monokote on the fuse/fin, and yellow Monokote on the wings/stab. But, that’s where I stopped. I just hung it up on the garage wall and left it for someday to prettify. But, with the S.M.A.L.L. gathering a couple of weeks away, I decided to finish this off. I probably won’t have room in the car for this, but since I’m on a tear…
I didn’t have a good picture to use for making the roundels and tail markings, so I kinda guessed on the dimensions. The roundels may be a bit large, but who cares. It looks good enough to me. Now I just have to find the tank that I used to have on this plane. I don’t know why I removed it, but it wasn’t with the plane.

Re: Another completion
The Medallion .15 is one of the engines I used on my Akromaster. I enjoyed it with the exception of it's noise level. In addition, I should've lowered the engine on the nose. When a tank is mounted I always found the need to raise it. This typically had the tank slightly over the top of the fuse. I ended up with my tank hooks directly on the top of the fuse. A longer not so wide tank works better on this model. Keeping the tank as close to the fuse as possible. a 2" wide tank is not a good option as it really leans out and causes fuel issues in the overhead maneuvers. I believe I was using a Perfect #9 with the pickup rerouted out of the bottom of the tank. I personally don't care for the Perfect tanks due to many of the having the pickup exiting on the top. The fuel line goes up and then down and then a u turn onto the spraybar. I really had issues using the Enya .15, no matter what I did, the engine would lean extremely mid flight. I needed a better uniflow tank or sink the tank into the outboard doubler which would've immediately fixed the problem.
As usual Mark, your model is stellar and I wish you luck with it. I like this particular model as it reminds me of a .15 Twister. I also feel we may never see this model in production again.

Re: Another completion
The Prolific Mark knocked another one out of the park. Outstanding!
I have a Medallion .15 on hand too. But after seeing big wing 1/2As (Pinto, etc.) , I wonder if a Medallion .09 or a NorVel Big Mig .074 would pull the plane around and overhead. I'd love a flight report as this kit is sitting in the entirely too long queue.
Ken, I'm logging your notes and sticking them in the kit box, along with templates. These kits pop up for private sale every now and then, but boy, those guys think the wood was grown in pastures of gold!

Re: Another completion
A failure point on the Akro is the elevator. It comes in two halves joined by small piece of basswood. The entire assembly should be covered in a minimum of 1/64" ply. In a relatively short period of flying, I've had it crack and separate.

Re: Another completion
Balogh, the PT-19 is the inspiration for the trim scheme.
Ken, taken care of. As for the noise, I sometimes think I might use the .15 muffler. Not sure yet.

Beautiful plane, Mark. Your choice of trim and markings makes it really stand out.
Good memmories
Love the Acromaster.
At age 13 it was the second kit i ever build and flew it a lot.
Loved the slotted leading and trailing edges and the tabs under the ribs.
A friend build one to and we would would just walk to the field at the end of the street with the models, bottle of fuel and starter battery.
Spend many summer afternoons that way.
Would love to build another one but also think they wil never be produced again...

Oh man...! Why make that decision... (being Sig... ) to not include a pre-bent elevator joiner-wire? Who was in charge of Sig's U-Control over the years? They kept the kits going..
Re: Another completion
Loved this view of your Akro Mark, it's the one we always get when reaching down to pick it up engine running or not.
Prompted me to go up to the loft and snap the same view of my Baby Ringmaster clone last flown into a tree (note dent on right wing) a couple of years ago on Ringmaster fly them if you got them day.
Unfortunately I never built a Akromaster.
