HERESY!!!! Billy 's New/Old Babe Bee Gets "De-Packaged"!
From the Breezy Hill Flyers' Facebook Page:
--------------------------------------------------------
"Like I said about Billy's Bee Tween Project'---'It's probably close to flying since its bare-bones photo appeared last Saturday'.
Well, here it is! Just got this photo showing Billy's choice of pre/early WWII Army Air Force training squadron colors for "Tween #2."
It's powered by a virgin Babe Bee .049, straight from its 'de-packaging' at last Wednesday's Club Meeting.
Stand by for flight photos & video!"

What good is it; if something that's "made to run".. is left indefinitely in its new packaging? There will always be a N.O.S. example somewhere to ogle, unless we're without sight.. in which case, the item would need to be unpackaged for tactile examination.., as well as an auditory sampling. Not to mention the aromatic joy associated with running a model-engine.
Here's wishing Billy's Tween flyer many great flights!!!
Open that package!
If you think it's bad to open up a brand new packaged engine so that it could be used, think about how sad it would be if said engine ends up in a landfill upon the owner's death. This actually happens!

To each his own, and I have no problem with anyone using a new in the package engine. I solve the problem by having at least one NIP and a few others used which I run. Same thrill for me.

That's one lucky Babe Bee! It gets a chance to touch the sky, something few finely aged NOS engines will ever get an opportunity to do.

I wonder, one day in the future the only sound will be not from an IC model engine but an electric. Ten years, twenty, thirty.................. Fuel, public opinion.

Yeah, everything has a life span, but it will still happen as long as somebody MAKES it happen. I believe that, somewhere, there will always be SOME squirrel that just HAS to run these things, even if on homebrew fuel, and even with the threat of being locked up.
I hope to keep my own brand of crazyness going for as long as possible, but there WILL be that dark day when I shut down

My guess is sooner rather than later. I suspect it won't be due to the lack of fuel or engines, but rather the slow demise of those who like them -- one needs only to look to the posted ages of the posters here -- and we are among a group of small engine enthusiasts.

I agree Andrew, partly to blame is the expense and storing of fuel and the mess that it creates. Electric is so much easier. Government intervention is another reason, ie climate change prompting the transition to elecric vehicles and setting an example.
But, I hold an electric motor in one hand and nitro be it .010 or .61 in the other and think crazy. How can this unimaginative blob of metal ever replace such a beautiful mixture of parts all working together to rotate a shaft.

My latest concern hasn't been future fuel sources, but glow plugs.
I've been considering electric over the last few months. There is a recent thread on 1/2A stunt power on StuntHangar. Small E-stuff is the price of a decent, used, observed-running-well engine with a glow plug or two.
I already own a LiPo charger suitable for up to 4S battery packs. From there, it is only the cost of battery packs (and charging power) and a timer/esc vs fuel.
At the rate I've been flying, I'll have the same stuff next year-sigh.
But I hope to make more noise and smoke before I go E.

Re: HERESY!!!! Billy 's New/Old Babe Bee Gets "De-Packaged"!
Hi Kim,
Christmas 1968, I opened a small box that had that same BB package in it.
Ripped apart in seconds, I had that BB.049 in my hands.
Other presents, socks/clothes blah blah blah, I was looking at the Cox instructions...
Then, there was a last big present under the tree, for me ?
Opened it up and it was a CG Swordsman 23, with all the props/etc needed. Wow!
I, 'rotary dial tone' called my friend John,
He has the the same present ! (our Dads were friends, and were trying to learn R/C without us ! )
Long story short,
We could fly CL before man went to the moon ! (with some help)
Fast way forward:
Beauty Contest at our small R/C club.
Al, a builder/not flyer, enters a scratch built Randy Randolf Be-Tween.
Flawless finish, and a GoldenBee. Winner.
Buddy Mark, trades stuff, gets it and puts the latest/lightest JR gear in it.
Next season, 3months later, everyone wants to try it.
When the tank ran dry, you had to land it close to you. (or walk in shame)
Most of the club burnt ~a gallon a weekend on our ~.40 planes.
Next 'beauty contest'
Al has this winner 'flawless' unflown biplane.
Second was his last place winner. Mark had cut off the landing gear, stuffed a Norvell .061 in it.
Hockey stick wood skid.
The original covering, was repaired/ protected by clear packing tape.
That Be-Tween, flew for decades...
Hope yours,
Flies as well,
Take care,
Have fun,
Dave

Thanks Dave!
I'll pass your note on to Billy!
Just how lucky are we to have these memories??!!!!
After Uncle Wayne got me soloed on my beloved PT, we quickly drew about 5 kids who also took up the the sport, and Sunday afternoons became a magical time. You could never know WHAT this little band of Mad Scientists would show up with.
In my mind's eye, those times now draw a close parallel to the old films of flying contraptions created by inventors early in the century, and "paint schemes" depended entirely on what odd bottles of incredibly expensive Aero Gloss Dope might be on hand.

Re: HERESY!!!! Billy 's New/Old Babe Bee Gets "De-Packaged"!
Dave's story reminded me.
Naval Schools Command Newport Rhode Island mid 1960's. Eight ship simulator model 1-BZ-2, auditorium style, huge stacked command stations, big rear projection screen with ship images projected. Ball/disc intergrators did the math as the students guided each ship in formations. We instructed and maintained.
Ball disc intergrators gave way to a new building with state of the art computers. Most of the guys were moved over to the new building but I and three others had orders so they left us to maintain the old building. So I had three young sailors with nothing to do for a month.
Thought about it. Gathered up some balsa and three Cox Babe Bee's from home. Put them to work and they came up with two flyable control line planes. The building was located at a busy intersection on the base with a big front yard. Kids eager to fly. What to do. Oh well, all they can do is bust me. Working hours, three kids in uniform flying model airplanes someone is going to notice. Expecting the worst I got a visit from the Officer in Charge. I'm putting you in for a commendation for finding a way to keep your crew occupied while the building is being vacated.
Still got it filed somewhere away in my papers. Still brings a smile and a sigh of relief.

For some time, all my planes were "light blue" trimmed in "light blue"! Living some distance out in the country and a long, long way (infinite for an 11 year old) from anything resembling a hobby shop, all my building materials came in one of those long boxes marked "SIG". Sixteen ounces of "light blue" combined with sixteen ounces of clear will paint a lot of models.

Back in the early 1970's, Testors / Pactra 4 ounce dope bottles were fairly cheap, also the 1 ounce bottles, too. Many of mine and my brother's Scientific half-A hollow logs were doped orange with green or blue trim. I learned earlier on not to use color dope on rubber powered stick and tissue models. I finished a Scientific 18 inch Cessna 180 rubber powered in orange dope, was too heavy to fly decently. Later in high school, got wiser and better. My brother got a Badger air brush for a Christmas present. I used it to spray clear dope thinned 50-50 on a 18 inch Guillow Fokker DVIII parasol, was proud of it as I covered it without any wrinkles in orange Esaki tissue. It tautened up really nice with the dope.andrew wrote:For some time, all my planes were "light blue" trimmed in "light blue"! Back then, the leadership was just glad that those sailors were doing something more productive than hitting the taverns and getting drunk, along with the usual trouble that occurs in a drunken stupor. So, getting some form of recognition from leadership for keeping those sailors out of trouble was considered commendable.andrew wrote:Sounds like both you and the OC were blessed with a good dose of common sense. And regarding Billy breaking open a legacy factory wrapped historic Babe Bee, there is more value in putting these to use to have fun than ending up at an estate sale. Value is relative. Babe Bees were probably made approaching in the hundreds of thousands worldwide, now nearly all disappeared as landfill material.

Re: HERESY!!!! Billy 's New/Old Babe Bee Gets "De-Packaged"!
I have always loved the Bee Tween, even though I have never built one. I remember buying the magazine with the pull-out plans for it, and a month later a guy shows up to the flying field with a freshly built 'Tween. It's still on my "someday" list.
Also, on the other hand, I also just broke open a NIP engine. I've had my Testors 8000 for years in its shrink wrap. I bought a couple of 8000s in an online classified, and I got one running, but not well. So, I decided that I want to see how well a new one would run on my Ambush. I'm just waiting for my Klotz oil to come from Amazon.

You have courage Mark. That's like a $100.00+ (asking) engine NIP, fifty cents out. Check ebay.
Ok, I joke about the fifty cents mostly because I can't find one used. I would like to find one to run and being unapologically what I am, I refuse to break open one of mine. I would be interested in how your's runs.
I keep them away with my other off-brands afraid that they would compromise my other engines by mingling.

Bob, I bought it for $20 on eBay about five years ago. I opened the package because I knew that if there was ever an urgent need for a NIB Testors 8000 for a Hollywood movie or SpaceX launch, you would be able to provide it from your collection.

Re: HERESY!!!! Billy 's New/Old Babe Bee Gets "De-Packaged"!
I've got one of those Testor 8000 in my collection. If one were to use it for RC or FF, would have to mount it so the engine is inverted. This puts the fuel pickup at the bottom of the tank, so it could fully empty during flight. I noticed a few selling the pipe bomb versions, both with cast crankcase and with nylon impregnated with fiber glass fibers crankcase for under $30 US. Those, someone here had posted about creating a special engine mount that would contain it, as it has no normal mounting system into a CL aircraft. Don't know if they ever tested it, but looked doable.

That's somewhere along what I paid for mine too Mark. I went back in my ebay history to find out but it only records for three years, not enough to pick up mine. It was interesting to see what I paid for this stuff. I'm pretty picky, penny wise but most of what I buy is on-the-cheap junk anyway. Unusual for me to pick up new in the package stuff.
