Old S.M.A.L.L, WW1 Combat video
Hi All,
This is not Cox, but .25 or under...
Hope you do not mind...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6oJ6JJC3uLM
All the planes were coro built. OS.25s.
Later that day WW2s were too fast to film...
Notice the durability of coro,
And how hard in calm wind,
It is hard to take off ww1s from a snowplowed 'inverted Carrier'...
It was a great day.
If you have never flown off snow,
Try it,
Happy New Year,
Dave
Oh yeah,
We got the then latest helcopter views,
The next year:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fwFTflNnEAc&t=37s
Amazing heli pilot,
To hover in that wind...
Frozen ground is easier,
Than muddy boots,
Dave

Nice videos, Dave, thanks for sharing! Given how the streamers at the end weren't unfurling wildly, appears there was wind but not that bad. Microphone in the video camera was catching more of the sound. Perhaps if an external mike were used, could have buffered some of that wind noise.HalfaDave wrote:Hi All, This is not Cox, but .25 or under... Hope you do not mind...

Also amazing is the club has a few hang glider pilots, watched them in action in a separate video.
Seems @Kim's Mud Dabber should have been there!

Re: Old S.M.A.L.L, WW1 Combat video
Hi All,
I was just the CD,
This was great video from the pioneers of back then,
All credit to them.(they were ahead of our time )
Spring was way too muddy, (we had the t-shirts/boots too !)
Summer was too busy to get a Contest date.
So we went for Nov.11th, for our Scale Combat,
Weather wise, it got later most times...
Every year, we stopped at 11AM, for a minute of silence...
Then, WW2 after lunch.
It was really fun, with really amazing pilots,
Hard to describe WW2 Combat,
You have to be there...
Land, fuel, put another streamer on...
Then fly for the next 6 minutes of more adrenaline, you used up last flight...
4 more rounds, gets almost brutal...
There is Luck, but...
You will find, way better flyers than you ,
The sixth round is insane.
Done by 3PM
Prizes by 4, and the sun goes down at 5.
Think, of those nice Roller Derby Gals... dressed in sensible clothes...
We are much more friendly....
Dave
P.S. The WW1 was just warm up and got caught on film. (~40mph)
If any one has aerial footage of .25 WW2 Combat, it would be nice to see...
Clocked around 80mph by radar.
P.P.S. No disrespect intended to any Roller Derby Gals, I just think they might need more clothing to fly Combat,
And I think they will like it....

Years back, when coroplast planes were the rage, my club would hold full contact combat events. I always was amazed how difficult it was to have a midair when you were trying and how easily a midair occurred when you were trying to avoid them!!

Oops! You were actually there, but not a spectator or flyer, like most of us would have been. You'd definitely know what the weather was like!
Good going!

Re: Old S.M.A.L.L, WW1 Combat video
Hi gg, (I have a mental problem with the flashy emo stuff, if you don't mind, sorry, no disrespect )
I was CD at all of the Onslaught Combat Matches.
I got to fly in every one.
I got 4th one year.
If you think you are a good, stay that way.
WW2 Combat is like Pylon, without pylons....
Hi andrew,
Trying to midair is next to impossible. We have tried it.
A .40 trainer hauling 80ft of streamer, try and hit/cut the end of the streamer.
The depth perception is just too hard. Try it.
While waiting for the scores to add up,
We started doing duels, (inverted full speed got too low and pointless)
One full throttle pass from the left,
Another one from the right.
Goal, meet head on, mid field, full speed.
(this was at the end of a Combat Match, with all safety measures involved)
There was a stick with a balloon mid field, as an aiming point.
The Line Marshal was in control, he said go.
At the end of 6 rounds all engines get really peaked.
So a split S and diving engines from both sides of the field...
Not even close, worse second pass.
These were top notch combat flyers,
Ran out of fuel, trying for a head on midair.
Crowd loved it.
Scores added up....went on...
I have never been able to 'midair' anyone, nor any pilot me.
Sure it will happen.
1 times out of 20? 30?
Videos seem to focus on the carnage,
Most Combat is a sweet cut,
By a better pilot.
Oh Crap !
I just remembered !
I put up these videos,
As an example.
To have Winter fun,
You need floats in powder snow...
Take care,
Have fun,
Dave

Sorry. I do it to show that my comments weren't meant to be taken seriously, more for the humor of it.HalfaDave wrote:Hi gg, (I have a mental problem with the flashy emo stuff, if you don't mind, sorry, no disrespect )

Hey, I spectated there a few times. The WW 2 stuff was pretty fast. I may even have one somewhere in the basement. The WW 1 was pretty cool though. I remember a Dave F. there. I guess no one does it any more in the Cobble Hills? Alan F.

Re: Old S.M.A.L.L, WW1 Combat video
Hi gg, Thanks for understanding !
Hi Allan,
I recall, trying to pick your brains for better engine performance....! 15yrs later, where did the time go?
Match days were very hectic.
I am Crosscheck. We all had 'nicknames/handles'... If you did not have one, one would be given you after your first Match.
My favourite is MigGyver. He crashed and repaired his Mig9s in his first match...
The pre-first round banter was all part of the fun. (a form of psyc warfare )
I liked all the Safety Rules. If you could not fly in the 'combat box', you were out.
This enabled us to have events that spectators could attend.
WW2s used 9-4s to keep the speed up in tight G turns. Not much straight straight and level in combat...
A 6 pitch prop could get you over 90mph straight line radar run. (94 is our record?) OSFX.25s .
The WW1s liked APC 10-3s, for climbing then diving attacks...
WW1s were more than twice as heavy.
CobbleHills is still going great, as far as I know. Sunday is combat day, if you want to tie a streamer on.
It all fizzled out because we could not get 2mmCoro anymore.
The coro construction/design developments over those years are amazing.
I was one of the last to fly, balsa/foam against them.
They would cry, 'It's a Woody, lets get him !' I had a golf ball sized of confetti, wrapped in paper towel on board.
The ultimate T-bone midair is yet to happen...
On video.
Having like minded people, is hard to find.
Take care,
Have fun,
Dave 'Crosscheck'
P.S. As a CD, I had several forms to fill out. One choice was checking the box of a Major Contest.
All it took was making 1st-3rd prizes... So ...
It all worked out,
Somehow,
Cox .049s would be better...

Re: Old S.M.A.L.L, WW1 Combat video
The Dutchmen in Waterloo use electric Strykers for combat. It gets pretty intense with no streamers. Half dozen planes till there is one left. Hot glue gun always on for repairs between heats. The 1/2" pink foam is traced from the original Stryker. I know this is the CEF and respect that, but they go pretty good with electric. Well, except for the expensive ESC/fuse hehe.

Hi aspeed,
This is why I joined this Cox forum,
To get away,
from waiting for batteries to recharge...
A Contest Director's nightmare...
Try to sell , the spectators. (we are waiting for recharging folks, please wait)
Any Cox .049 we can run,
Is quieter than any modern EDF...
No disrespect,
This is the future.
Cox International products will always work.
And all the kids will like it.
Greta will approve.
When she knows castor beans, methanol and nitro are solar powered...
The world will change,
Cox engines,
Are,
Respect,
Dave
