Rocky the Squirrel RIP Empty Rocky the Squirrel RIP

Shot one as a kid, ran over a couple (unintentional) but this is the first one I ever buried.

Yesterday afternoon coming home from getting the mail and trash can with the ATV I noticed a squirrel laying on the shed's front deck.  Noisy ATV didn't stir him.  Got off and took a look. Raised his head and looked at me.  Not, good.

Later I noticed that he had moved over in front of the garage, looked at me again.  Misty rain and cool, I got an old towel and covered him over.  This morning, he had moved out from under the towel and died.  Dug a hole, found a tombstone, wrapped him in a Walmart bag and buried him next to Mark and Lisa's dog Shelby.

 RIP Rocky.

Bonnie on a squirrel hunt, she will hold that look for hours. The squirrels jump from palm to palm and run down the top of the fence.
She is the gentlest dog I have ever seen, I don't think she would kill a squirrel. The two small terriers I have are vicious killers.
Their dream came true the other day and they caught one and killed it, one of the small dogs had it in its mouth.  It did not get a fancy funeral like yours. LOL

Next on your Hit list: Yogi the Birdfeeder busting Bear!!

Strange,  but due to Climate Change, Tax laws or DNA Mixing the squirrels in my neighborhood have changed from all Brown to a variety of black and brown!! Black squirrels are common along the lakeshore communities of Lake Michigan and seems they've moved inland and mixed in with the Basic Browns of our neighborhood. Kinda strange to see at the feeder a Black body w/ brown face or brown body with Black tail and feet.  Your Rocky (RIP) looked to be a gray squirrel? I remember as a youngster having Sunday Dinner at my Aunt and Uncles house.  Aunt Sally serving up a roaster pan full of 4-legged chickens, that Uncle Jim caught hunting! Old Bugger

Wonder if may be it died of old age. Old Bugger

Regarding the change in squirrels from brown to black and brown, have you played music to see whether they would react to salsa  Cinco de Mayo or God Save the Queen? Canada

Might tell you where they are originally from. If they do neither, they might be in-bred and support mother and apple pie. 4th of July Flag

Regardless, in upcoming meat shortage days with a pellet gun, they'd be just as tasty as chicken but leaner. Thanksgiving Dinner

A sad and touching story, Bob, I love squirrels, they are so beautiful with their big black eyes. We also see them at our lakeside summer house, a mother with 3 pups often coming to the feeder our neighbor has built, they are hopping on the ridge of the fence.

Do you think Rocky died of natural causes, or was poisoned? It does not seem to be usual that wild animals come and die in the neighborhood of humans?.

Poison crossed my mind, new neighbors next door but I saw no foaming at the mouth. Small, may have been a female. Rockette maybe.

Gray squirrel, numerous around here. We have some smaller red's but they are the exception. Chipmunks too.

That's too bad. They are sure interesting to watch. But it was nice of you to do what you did for it as well as giving it a burial.
