Big Brother round two

Big Brother round two
Nope, don't get your hopes up...........not airborne
Removed the coat hangar bridle, ugly thing never did like it. If it goes, it will be with the wing eyelet.
Mark isn't here to help me get all three engines started, and I just wanted to see how it would do with the single front wheel. Sat it down on the smooth garage floor and gave it a push. Ran straight and smooth, a big improvement over four wheels.
Hitched up the fire to the triple vented plastic backplated Golden Bee. Filled the tank with 25% Cox, primed and flipped.
I just really wanted to see how one engine would pull it on asphalt
Sat it down and it ran at a good clip, straight and true. Ran to catch up and turned it around. I have the pick-up in the circle position so it only ran a couple of minutes.
Stopped just short of the grass. A good start.

Goofey Fred! I'm serious as a heart attack.
I sat the tether base on a paver, probably raising it about an inch and a half hoping if it does get air (which it won't) it would stay close to the ground. But I must admit, on a single engine and rough asphalt it progressed at a pretty good trot. On a smooth surface, I dunno...... It would have to overcome rolling resistance and over two pounds of weight. Airfoil or not. However I did look at mean average chord when cutting the wings.

Not much going on today, wall to wall rain. Driveway a puddle, should take off the wheels and give the pontoons a chance.
Took the time to add the struts and a windshield. Simple, I had tried making a frame and styrene, gave up and just used clear Scotch packing tape cut to shape and stuck on. Keeps spent castor out of the fuselage.
Fun build. No instructions, no plans, no rules, no stress. Basic shape modified to my likes. Eyeball mostly with a minimum of help.
I intentionally angled the nose engine down, but the side engines pull straight ahead. Should help with the forward speed.
It had to happen. Matt and Bernie, or is it Bert and Ernie.
I like Matt's old style clear stickers best, but an exacto knife trims the newer style to size. I have resisted the urge to clutter it up, but they have both contributed to my models over the years so I thought it justified.

.............Hadn't thought of that, but accurate. Pontoons for skids. "Flight of the slightly rotten pine" maybe.
Looks like Attenbourgh? and Stewart. Bert and Ernie! They did get that thing to fly but unfortunately killed the pilot. Paul Mantz I think.

Re: Big Brother round two
How about this:
I have been wondering about adjusting the needles on the two side engines. Not impossible coming in from behind but quite difficult. With the engines running, even more so.
Holes drilled into the top wing and two Old Glories attached to music wire and soldered on the needles. Going round and round flapping in the breeze anytime but especially on the Fourth of July.
Closed off the vents with tooth picks, and closed the exhaust with the piston. Still, the vent for the intake is open. Not fool proof, but we will see.

I hate to be negative, but is there any chance the toothpick(s) could get broken and or end up with bits of toothpick in the fueltank causing running problems that might be very very hard to realize what is causing them. what about a short piece of fuel tube sealed off at one end and then placed over the vents. You could make them look like proper caps, so it looks good also. Put little orange flag thingos on them like on fighter aircraft pre-flight :-) I mean, the design is clearly a fighter
Or can you get proper caps for them? or just dont worry about it. Lol. But I reckon you could fashion some pretty easy out of fuel tube that look good or any other Cox parts that might happen to fit nicely, assuming there are some.
I hadnt noticed the location of the needles to the wing, I reckon I would be extending those needles through the wing and then once you have extended them, it will always hold its tune and never need them moving. You could fashion them such that they can be pushed through the wing, adjust and remove,.... Then it keeps its sleek fighter lines. :-)
I better stop. Lol. Stupid ideas are flowing to freely! Lol. My ritalin hasnt kicked in yet. HaHa.
You could play off Bernie and Matt for the 'Major/Principal' naming rights. :-) mind you they might start thinking all these old nutters getting excited about this project might put people off. . Bringing up the flight of the pheonix even. what an awesome movie, I so remember from my youth :-) and it seems apt even somehow.
best fun thread ive ever followed on any forum. and there is clearly more to come!

I know the feeling Yabby, and plead guilty myself.
I think the toothpicks will be ok. The larger needle head is easier to turn than the later smaller head. But neither is easy. I'm going to try it as is, when I get my courage up.
Bernie and Matt may pay me to keep their companies name off it.
