.020 with throttle ring - original application was?
Hi, folks,
I bought this .020 out of a "miscellaneous box" at a recent RC swap meet. It seems to have a throttle ring, which is what I've been hunting for. The plastic back plate suggests the engine is from a specific Cox model application. Anyone know what it came from? I'm just curious as from my limited experience, .020 powered Cox models were not numerous, and throttled applications must have been even more rare. Is the starter spring for reverse rotation?
Engine is presently seized / gummed up. I'm hoping to get it cleaned up and operational for an RC application. Please wish me luck!
Thanks!
Jon

Re: .020 with throttle ring - original application was?
This is a product engine as it was used in the Pitts Little Stinker ready to fly model airplane. It was mounted in the model with the red plastic back plate. The cylinder pointed to the right of the plane. My engine came with a left hand starter spring and a matching propeller. The needle stem is made from brass. From Here http://www.mh-aerotools.de/airfoils/cox_frameset.htm Someone has put that throttle ring on there and retro fit the spring and it is LF hand

My guess it that engine is from the Ryan ST with throttle control 020. that mounting is to skinny for the Little stinker. the little stinker/pitts models use a engine mount that includes the landing gear. go to the 1970's parts list in the info sheets and look up the RYAN ST.

Yes, Ryan ST for sure. The same engine was used on the PT 20 (same as Ryan ST but green/yellow) but not sure if it was offered with throttle. The Pitts used a PeeWee 020.

"Synchro-Pilot throttle and elevator control!"
Thanks! You guys put me on the right path.
According to the Cox model database
http://www.mh-aerotools.de/airfoils/cox_frameset.htm
the Ryan ST-3 model of 1968 indeed had an .020 with throttle. The airplane box boasted "Synchro-Pilot throttle and elevator control!"
That's really cool to me because 1968 was the year I bought my first Pee Wee, used for $2. It powered several 1/8" sheet balsa profile CL models of my own design. I still have it. Now I have one from the same era to power a throttled RC model. I get too dizzy to fly CL anymore
Cheers!
