Corky, a beautiful model who asks for heaven!
Friends of CEF, I am pleased to share this beautiful model.
This model has its story and I want to share it with you.
Shortly its previous owner, Mr. Roberto Ishkanian, will tell us about the origin of this creation… so soon I will retransmit Roberto's words, for now I will leave you some photos of this beautiful jewel!

Re: Corky, a beautiful model who asks for heaven!
thanks guys for leaving your comments! ....
I will be answering any query that arises here.
As I promised you, my friend Roberto Ishkanian, has written the history of this impeccably finished model ... well, let the story begin to discover each step of this wonderful model aircraft ... there we go!
Roberto tells us:
In 1998 I built this biplane to present it in a traditional 1/2A meeting at a club in Buenos Aires. It is based on the "Corky" designed by Van Hereford, published in Model Airplane News (November 1963). Today the plan and article can be easily obtained from the Outherzone website (plan oz2937).
The original “Corky” has a 28-inch wingspan and was designed for Free Flight with a Cox Pee Wee .020 engine, with both wings made of curved balsa sheet with false ribs. My version is exactly the same size, but I adapted it to fit a reed valve Cox .049 and a Cox-Sanwa 2-channel radio. Both wings are ribbed and plated above and below, forming an approximate Clark-Y profile. I also made other modifications, such as the addition of the lateral wing pillars, and two front air intakes that allow the engine crankcase to be cooled.
The wings were finished with the original MonoKote, while the fuselage and tail group were finished with dope and then with LusterKote spray paint (from Top-Flite), with the colors matching those of the MonoKote. Although I have not checked the weight on a scale, I can say that it turned out to be a very light model. This is because I took a lot of time selecting the wood, using the lightest balsa I could get.
A special comment about the incidences: the engine is approximately 1 degree negative, the stabilizer is at zero degrees, the lower wing is also at zero degrees, but the upper wing is 1 degree positive. This responds to a very effective concept for biplanes that are not designed for aerobatics, but for a very safe sport flight. The theory goes that when the front wing (in this case the upper wing) is stalling, the lower wing is still maintaining lift but with the CG almost at its leading edge. Therefore, at that moment the model lowers its nose without getting out of control, and thus there is a better chance of recovering normal flight.
Remember: in the biplane models the front wing should have 1 to 1,5 degree more positive than the rear wing to obtain this "saving effect". In the case of the Beechcraft Staggerwing the lower wing is forward, but in most biplanes the upper wing is forward, and is the one that needs the most positive incidence. Also remember not to consider this concept for aerobatic biplanes.
In that year 1998 I worked on the model all night before the meeting, and without sleeping I went to the field and arrived in time to present it. When I was given permission to use my frequency (72.080 MHz) I discovered a problem in my Cox .049 motor. When it started, a couple of seconds later it stopped. Then I realized that when I assembled the engine during the early morning, I forgot to put that little O-Ring in the metal conduit that goes behind the reed valve. There was nothing I could do at the field, and I only displayed my biplane in static mode.
That day I thought about saving the model and presenting it at the 1/2A meeting the following year, but due to lack of time and other reasons, the model hung on a wall for almost 22 years. During 2020 I decided to sell it, and its new owner is Diego Ochoa (from Venado Tuerto, Santa Fe, Argentina), and my good friend Mauricio Bertello is preparing it to fly. But Mauricio is improving it, as he installed a third servo for throttle control on the Cox engine. This is really good because in my version it only used 2 channels, and all the landings would have been in glide (that is, in emergency). But now with the throttle control manufactured by Mauricio, the landing can already be made when the pilot so decides.
I am looking forward to seeing the results of this model in flight.
Good flights!

Diego Ochoa, a friend and current owner of the model, has trusted to leave me this jewel to install it and prepare it to be thrown into the air ... surely Diego will also leave us a comment ... as you can see ... the Aeromodelling unites passions .... and this model has had the patience of waiting 20 and more years before flying! ....

Gracias Roberto y Mauricio

It is very gratifying to be able to see the images presented by Mauricio, and the story told by Roberto, its builder !!
For those who don't know, Roberto has had a TV show called Hobby Show for years. A long time ago, I had been looking and falling in love with that plane, which Roberto used to present in his programs, without knowing that there was someone lurking hahaha
This summer, talking with Mauricio, I told him about my liking for that plane and he graciously agreed to ask Roberto if he was able to sell it. And so it was, he managed to get it.
I have no doubts about what Roberto must have felt when he let go of him, his old companion!
Once home, I just stared at it, knowing that to put it into flight, I was going to have to make a gigantic effort, to honor the builder of it.
The biggest obstacle for me was to achieve a fuel tank suitable for the space I had, but I knew it was a great challenge.
Days ago at the club, talking with Mauricio, and telling him about the situation, he graciously agreed to not only make a tank, but also place the motor and throttle servo.
Knowing your vast experience, good taste and love for this beautiful Hobby, do not hesitate to put it in your hands, and the result was what you expected, a beautiful plane, built by an Expert like Roberto, and motorized and tuned by another Expert. like Mauricio.
I have no words to thank you both, and I can't wait to fly it and share the video with you !!
I leave you cordial greetings and thank you very much, Diego

Well now I comment on the little jobs I did on the model and the respective photos.
1 Fit a .049 Babe Bee motor with flaper valve.
2 Install the throttle ring and corresponding drive servo.
3 Fabricate a fuel tank to perfectly match the available shape of the fuselage.
4 Reshape the lower cover of the tank and engine, cutting a circle so that the throttle ring can work without problems.
5 Fit the ignition key.
6 Place the battery by means of the strap, which should be removed in case of recharging.
7 Control the CG Center of Gravity, leaving it with a nose drop of about 15 degrees.
8 I changed the wheels, since the original ones of the engine disintegrate over the years, manufacturing jujes for the correct sliding of each tire.
9 I added a few touches of paint to finish the interior.
place the receiver.
10 Finally I checked the weight of the model, which is about 520 grams.

Beautiful job Mauricio...I like the engine cowl design very much. The engine may need a high compression or turbo head because 520 gram is not small load for a Bee to haul it from the runway?

Beautiful model indeed!
Very nice job on the overhaul, Mauricio! I like the way you pay attention even to the smallest details (like the wheel bearings) and make everything look nice as well as functional.
I am sure both of your friends will be proud to see this model fly. Roberto as the builder, Diego as the new owner and you too, being the ”catalyst”, making it all possible.
Thank You for sharing this story!

Ask Roberto about your concern, he tells me that he does not remember exactly because many years ago, but that it may have to do with the glue.getback wrote:NICE !!! is that the Bob Smith of the CA Glues , maybe that's the glue they used and gets his advertisement on the plane ?

Thanks András, really and with the experience of other models, I think you can take it off the ground well. The issue now is that the grass on the track is a little higher and we have to see if it is possible for the wheels to slide without braking, but it will be a matter of going to test shortly!

That is sure one beautiful looking and built biplane they your friend has there. I was very shocked to see an .049 in the cowl after looking at the two first pictures. I thought it was much bigger than what it was said to be a post or two later. I am also sure it will fly just great after the little things you had done to it, as you do things very nice and clean with much attention to detail. I too will love to see and hear how your maiden flight of the airplane goes.

Great flight and the choice of music is also good. I really like that song. However, I am still in disbelief about the Corky. Until hands are in the picture and video, it sure looks like a big plane. A wonderful job done by all of you. The original builder, you for the work you did on it, and your friend for the flight. You should all be proud!

Corky!!
