4 reedies for a 1/8 RC car
I found this picture of the beginning of the 70's. It's the back of a 1/8 RC track car with 2 pairs of 049's driving both back wheels. The engines have postage stamp back plates. The flywheels are I think homemade and the clutch assembly is Jerobee. A very nice disc brake and lots of levers and control rods.

They're both very neat looking. I have to agree David about the poor little .010 on the tether car. If it does or did run, it will definitely be getting a workout!

I really like that setup. I wonder how many cylinders the designer went through before he found four that indexed the same way? I suppose he could have adjusted the linkages separately just not seeing more than one adjustment for each set.

For adjusting the throw, I see an adjustable linkage between the front pair and the rear pair as you said and 2 adjustble rods with ball joints from the 90° control arms to each right cylinder. The synchronising of the exhaust opening has to be done by turning the circlips on the throttle ring.
I think it's quite an achievement to conceive and realise a setup like that. The engine capacity adds up to .20 which is the capacity commonly used on 1/8 cars.
When you look closely, the engines are not mounted by means of the back plate but at the front of the crankcase. Each bolt hole seems to be drilled trough and tapped and 4 extra bolts are used to fix each engine to the rear axle bearers.
What about starting??

Just imagine the noise this thing must make
Must be a bit fiddly to start... I think I would add a harness that would allow all the glow plugs powered through one connector.
Does each engine have its own clutch or am I missing something? A clutch for each engine would add reliability, as one engine dying or limping wouldn’t completely cripple the car.

Yes, 1 clutch per engine.
It's a picture on the cover of a magazine. It's for sale on Ebay cheap but shipping costs for me are too high; and it's not sure that there is an article about it inside the magazine!
