Picked up this Super Cool Kit - 1/2A SST
Thought I would share my latest purchase. I couldn't help myself it was 5mins from my house and needs to built lol.
Super cool seller. Kit was given to him, his house is 50' from our local sport airport runway too.
Upon closer inspection and to my suprise I discovered a nib teedee was included in the box. Only item missing is the foam core wings from my cursory review.
Super pumped to build this. I'm thinking I'll just make a standard spar and rib version in place of the cores... however I do know a local gent that can cut cores (just started this winter). Might throw him some work. But maybe for a different model. What do you think? Rib or build by the foam core in the plans?
Another interesting feature is there is no rudder channel, is this fairly common on 1/2a rc to keep weight down?

Geez...what a find! I never find anything around here. I think I'd go with the foam cores as long as you know someone that can make them. ... I Iike your tablecloth!

Great find! The name of the plane though...
Half Asst
If I had someone nearby that cuts cores, that’s the route I would take.
And yes, two channels was the norm in smaller planes of that era. Rudder and elevator for trainers, ailerons and no rudder for faster models and more experienced pilots. No throttle, so it was full speed ahead and then a dead stick landing.
With modern gear you could make it 4 channel and end up lighter than the old 2 channel systems mainly because of LiPo instead of NiCd.

Great find!!!
I would build the wing with ribs and spars. Forming the ribs after the original airfoil in a block and cover it with 1mm
Balsawood. No need for rudder. I did fly many small airplanes in this size, eg, HoB P51, there is absolutely no need. Even if there is no dihedral in the wing. All .40 size pylon racing are flown with aileron only. Here you use rudder only for getting airborne.

I built one from that kit over 25 years ago. I remember the kit as somewhat crude.

Lol, that makes way more sense spelling the name out.
Thanks for the background info on the controls too.
The kit is indeed crude compared to a CG one. Im excited to build it for sure. I have a 40size trainer and SPAd in r/c but no 1/2a stuff. I rarely fly R/C mostly CL for the convenience and 0 club politics. May try the local R/C club again, i think things have changed for the better in the last couple years. They are slowly becoming more of a anything R/C club which is great to see.

Thanks Roland and welcome to the forum glad you found it. Seen your intro note earlier. Its funny you start with one, then you get a drawer full, a shelf a corner of the house lol.
