Re: our forum family album
My paternal Aunt Vera and me circa 1943 taken about a year after I was hit and run over by a car not 50 feet from where this picture was taken. Crushed shoulder, broken leg and internal injuries. Doctors gave me little chance. Local machine shop constructed a special cage to keep my left shoulder in place. Spent six weeks in the hospital recovering. Not just any car, but a chauffeured driven Cadillac, wish it had been a model T. I remember the trip to the hospital watching the rope hand hold swinging behind the front seat and wondering why my fathers light colored pants were red.
But this is about my Aunt Vera, one of my very few hero's.
Born with Spina Bifida that never slowed her down or changed her positive outlook on life. Today they would label her "Handicapped" and offer special schools and programs, in the wartime 1940's there was none of that. She worked at the local factory. I remember her walking to work each morning rain or shine holding her purse in her left hand and swinging her right balance arm coming so close to the ground. In all her years I never heard her complain. More special than I can describe here.
I actually was looking for the picture of me laying dizzy on the ground after flying and crashing a PT-19 when I came across this one. It's been a long time since I have had the opportunity to brag about my Aunt. Thanks for giving me the chance to do so and for bearing with me while I did.
To this day, whenever I see a digital clock read 6:41 I remember Grandpa Fred, his Packard, and my Aunt Vera.
