Pee Wee Backplate Conversions - Anyone Experimenting Yet?
I jumped onboard and purchased some of the backplates for the Pee Wees a while back. I remember 1/2A Nut doing some testing at the time. Has anyone else done some real world testing of the setup yet, static runs or flying? Since Cox Int is selling them, surely there have been some tinkerers out there. I've been off building some electric planes and a handful of model rockets lately but am returning to the dark side of Cox-powered model construction now. I'm curious to see how they are working out in the field. My latest project is a Willy Nillies Cub 250 and will have an .020 for power. Trying to decide whether I will use a TD with the large alum tank that Cox Int sells or a backplated Pee Wee with external tank. The plane is small and light enough that a Pee Wee should have plenty of oomph for it. I have a handful of unused Pee Wees lying around and most of my TD .020s are committed to other firewalls. The choice of engine setup will determine where I place the firewall during construction. Thanks.

Sounds quiet out there. I've moved on with the project and set up a backplated Pee Wee for the new plane. When I have more to show and tell about, I'll post up in the Models and Modeling forum.

Its been quiet on my end too. I can ping Bernie to see if he had any issues with these with his customer base. Usually no news is good news.

I haven't had a chance to do any test runs for myself yet.
Perhaps no news is good news? Or others are like me, and just haven't gotten to running the engines yet. Especially over the winter months.

Yep, I've been busy myself. Haven't cranked a Cox engine in months. I'm throwing caution to the wind and building a plane for this setup. What could possibly go wrong?

Troy your finger might get hit by the prop
Yes did quite a bit of testing for carbon blend backplates .020 - .049
The Cox Killer Pee Wee RC was born impressive!
With a internal tank solid run times a rebirth of the Pee Wee!
3.8 x 3 prop / Peak 20,833 rpm with throttle
4oz thrust / 59 mph pitch speed / .040hp - 29w
1 head shim / turbo plug adapter / 25% nitro
- Carbon blend horse shoe backplate
- Large bore intake
- 128 TPI Needle valve
- Pee Wee throttle sleeve
- Tee Dee Cylinder / Piston set
- Mylar performance reed valve
- Valentine .020 bullet spinner
- Kamtechnik Turbo Plug prototype adapter
- OS P4 plug

Mine just needs to chug-a-lug a little J3 Cub around the patch.

I'm with Jason.
Waiting for this artic weather to move on. Its only been up to 50F during the day, and all the way down to 30-40F at night!
Turns out the Golden Years are also the Coldest Years, at least for me!
Have a backplate from Bernie, and some new Pee Wee props. A few small APC props to try as well.
Want to see how the backplate stands up to fuel and vibration, but have no doubt it will be an improvement over the FF size Pee Wee tanks.

Re: Pee Wee Backplate Conversions - Anyone Experimenting Yet?
I find this thread to be right on target for part of my current interests. Don't know how many of you might have been infatuated with the sport FF designs of Keith Laumer. I was! Buttons, Little Red Twin, Twin Lizzie, Zoomerang, etc. Anyway I have a hankering to revisit some of these. Problem is, most of them are smaller than 36" in span, and some like Little Red Twin are down around 24". They need something along the lines of the PeeWee for motivating power. I have two, and I'll be getting a couple of backplates from Bernie for them 'cause having to use the integral tank mount for short run FF is a major problem for me. I've messed up two tanks trying to drill an appropriate hole to be able to use an external tank. I guess I'm just fumble-fingered to my dismay. (Wish I had those two disasters back, the front parts were discarded in fury.)smooth_bill wrote:.....

Anyway, I'll be watching this thread for insights into how these backplates work. Thanks TeeBee for starting it!

Now we're talkin'! I'm building my Willy Nillies Cub around this setup. It will surely work out. Feeling warm and fuzzy about it.

Oh, I've been around lurking and tinkering in the shadows. Got sidetracked by a couple of electric powered plane builds followed by some model rocket projects to add a little variety to this life. I'll put up some pics of my Cub on the modeling page.
