But are they as reliable as Cox heads? Personally-I have two theories-one: that the elements are not Pt or Pt group metals-but rather nichrome or similar-as was used in the early days by some cheap glowplugs-or two: that they use a base metal element with the thinnest possible plating of Pt over the base metal wire-again a generally substandard performance and short effective life results. The 074 heads are the absolute pits-most of mine will only sustain running with the battery connected...fortunately the Fox 09 heads fit the 074-again a bit of bench experimentation is called for-now would be the ideal time to do it....except for my dense suburban location :-(

As far as the glow elements are concerned, a replacement with the Turbo heads is often possible if there is enough meat left to install them. If a normal plug is used then it will not work, but many of the smaller .049 and larger specific plugs can be changed over to turbos. It is just an 8mm x 0.75 tap and a 60 degree countersink for the seat, using a 3/16" hole. Normally the compression is the same as it was stock , or a slight bit more as the tip of the plug is a bit flat. You can get hotter or colder plug choices than with the old NOS antique plugs. Save the old burned out plugs in any case.
