I loved Ambroid, and use Sig-ment much the same way just fine...it just doesn't have as much "head-kick" as Ambroid.
The old stuff was called "Super Elastic Bubble Plastic," and I can still hear the ad play in my head. Just another benchmark calling me old.
I'd love to build this plane for CL. Maybe flatten the dihedral, and mount the bellcrank in the fuselage. Keep the wing removable for easier transport. Hmmmm, this sounds like a nice pattern plane.
I can't wait to see yours fly!
Thanks Jim! Gonna try to keep after it.

OMG Eric! I cannot believe you found that this is still available! I remember very well every trip my parents and I went on to the USA when I was little, my dad always treated me to a package of this stuff. Now I have a new mission to see if this is available here in Canada. Would be entertaining to try again. Roll a ball, pit it on the end of the straw, and blow. Heck, while typing this, I now too can remember the smell. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.

you will place two Tee Dee there and they will take it to the model, in the meantime I share this video, they are two Pee Wee .020, the most similar to a twin-engine that I have done ... one day maybe you will try something like what you are doing!...
Turn up the volume and enjoy the video friend!

The original Skylark was designed NOT to have an elevator, so one was installed. The nacelles are also shaped and finished. Everything got sanded and I'm done with that stuff!
I'm also down to my last precious tube of Ambroid Airplane Cement! The end of an era!
Can't have that Kim. Send me your address (again, lost when my computer crashed) and these will be on their way. One sprung a leak but it's still pliable. Use it up first. I may even include the display. The era lives on.
The Testors green tubes vapors are the absolute worst in the get your attention dept.

Steve,
Switch to Sig-ment. It works, looks, acts just about the same.

Re: More Work on the Jr. Skylark-Still Clear Doping, But Getting Ready for Color
Got in some more work on the Goldberg Jr. Skylark project that's slowly creeping along.
The note is from my Facebook Page and is written to be understandable by those who have never experienced this type of old school finishing (and maybe flash-back material for those who have!).
--------------------------------------------
Doping out in the shop...butyrate that is...
So the Skylark gets a layer of light silkspan applied to it's fuselage..."painted on" with Brodak clear dope, along with a little shaping work on it's tail cone.
This is the most "crafts-like" stage, with a lot of tissue trimming and using clear dope to bond it with the balsa, then using sand paper to trim away the excess. Makes the whole shop smell like "Model Airplane"...which, when I was kid, used to get me evicted from the front room to the front porch. Mom just didn't appreciate my version of "Aroma Therapy".
It'll get sanded and clear-coated 'till it starts to get a shine, or until I start seeing purple dust bunnies in my closed-window, winter time shop.
The Skylark's covering cures while Navigator gets some dope and silkspan attention.

Re: More Work on the Jr. Skylark-Still Clear Doping, But Getting Ready for Color
Kim,
Wonderful work!
The tissue is "still" available. It takes a bit of creativity to find it.
Jump over to StuntHanger and search for "doctor office exam paper."
In a nutshell, this is a "crepe" exam table paper that looks, feels, and behaves like Guillow's tissue. I have mentioned it here before, and picked up a 23" wide by 125' long roll.
Try it. You may find it to be quite an acceptable/compatible substitute. Shoot me a PM with your address, I'll send you a chunk.

Hey Jim,
Thank you man, but I do have a roll that was graciously sent to me by Andrew a year or so ago, and intend to try it on another upcoming project.
Thank you again !

Re: More Work on the Jr. Skylark-Still Clear Doping, But Getting Ready for Color
Still making baby steps on the two main projects but, after tripping over some of my gear and nearly destroying two innocent model airplanes, I dedicated 20 minutes (that turned into two hours) to put some order in the chaos.
I didn't take a "before" photo, so just imagine a bunch of delicate stuff, stacked on and interlocked with other delicate stuff (sort of a Model Airplane Jenga Game), with NO floor space visible.
Anyway, after a LOT of staring and thinking, I decided to go with the Skylark's original box art scheme and color, and will be cranking up the paint gun if Mother Nature gives me a calm clear day, with some low humidity.
Navigator needs some more clear coats before it gets some color, which will be a white base with dark blue trim.
Let the dope fly!!!!

Looking good Kim . I'm a big fan of silk span and like you I hoard every scrap . My covering starts off with nitrate dope and silk span or tissue , then Klass Kote epoxy primer and epoxy paint . Free fight models I skip the primer . Keep up the good work .

Re: More Work on the Jr. Skylark-Still Clear Doping, But Getting Ready for Color
The fin looks like it has been cut from a nice piece of "C" grain balsa and should stay nice and straight. Some of the kits I have have a very poor or inappropriate selection of balsa.
I am still in favour of the dope and tissue method of finishing even though it is a slow process. It is just difficult here to get nice lightweight and medium weight tissue that shrinks witout tearing.
What are you using for the white basecoat on top of butyrate?

Re: More Work on the Jr. Skylark-Still Clear Doping, But Getting Ready for Color
Yeah, I've gotten several Short Kits from Fast Eddie at Lazer Works, and the balsa has always been good.
The finish from beginning to end is all Brodak Buyterate dope. Once I get the part sanded to where I think it's ready, I brush on a 50/50 coat of clear, sand that smooth, and start laying down the silkspan...usually the lightest stuff I have.
Navigator has an open bay in the last half of it's fuse, so I used some heavy grade to hopefully keep me from putting a finger through it in the field.
I use a piece of "worn out" fine sandpaper between clear coats 'till I get a good shine, then shoot some color...usually a thin white coat to help make the colors pop. My biggest "discipline problem" is making myself give the dope plenty of drying time between clear coats.
Of course, the REALLY fun times come when the colors are shot, and I'm pulling away the masking tape to see how well the edges sealed, and get my first glimpse of how the thing is gonna look! And we're getting close to that happening!
"Little Traveler" was all silkspan covered, and I had a hoot finishing it!
