Speed calculator, the Old School way.
Speed calculator, the Old School way.
I found this online a few years ago. I think it was on RCG, but I haven't been able to find it again. I know that everyone loves online calculators to get their speeds to the 1/1000 of a MPH. But I'm still old school, and love slide rule whiz wheels. I have used this slide rule against a computer spreadsheet, and it's accurate to within a half of a MPH with the online calculated speed.
I keep the one I made up in my flight box. Here's the one I made up from the .pdf plans.
I have the copy on three different drives, just in case, so that I don't lose it. But I thought that I'd post it here for Y'all to see. If anyone wants it, I can email a copy of the .pdf I have. It'd be a shame to for this to get lost to history.

Re: Speed calculator, the Old School way.
When I was in elementary school, we had little project magazines called "Think and Do."
Mark, I admire your ever-present embodiment of thinking and doing, always coming up with interesting examples of thinking up and executing fun and useful stuff. You should visit the Hangouts show again and let us see this one. We talked about your control line simulator the other night too.
Fyi, it looks like Youtube/Google is finally about to remove the Video Hangouts. It's not clear that they will replace it with anything, so come August 1st, things may get bumpy while we try to figure out a new way to have a group video chat that does all the things we have been enjoying for the past 2 years.

Re: Speed calculator, the Old School way.
Maybe it would be possible to start a thread on RCG with the PDF? I am not sure how that works, but it would be spread out to more guys that wouldn't have to pester you. Rusty, I have been lurking on the Hangouts for a couple months now. Hope it keeps going somehow. Saw a few of the guys at Brodak's. Kind of odd, seems like you know them, but they don't know you.

Mark,
This would be a good tool to have for the upcoming speed event (RWYB)
Pretty sure the email link works in my profile, could you please send it along if you have a moment? At least before the 31st...
Thanks,
Ron

Re: Speed calculator, the Old School way.
Great job. I too had that file a while ago and also made a few of them and gave them away to fellow modellers in my CL club. Funny too as I also laminated the ones I made too. The way I held them together was with a leather punch and eyelet plier set. I have the ones listed here.

Re: Speed calculator, the Old School way.
Jim and Ron, .pdf's on the way.
Levent, thanks for the magazine reference. Now I have a reference for further research.
New, that's a great idea. I have a couple of punches, so I'll print out another template and laminate it, then try using the punch and eyelets. My big issue will be in getting the holes centered...
Mike, you're most welcome. That's why i wanted to ensure more people know about this and possible make their own.
Rusty, I'll try to get on Friday night. I get home from work at just about the time Y'all are signing off on Mondays.
Aspeed (sorry, I don't know your first name), I think someone else is going to be making a thread over on RCG.
Crank, that'd work, but I don't have enough fingers on my hand to do that calculation at the field.

Re: Speed calculator, the Old School way.
Algebra was the hardest class I took in 12th grade grade and I flunked it, for my business I did have to learn to use basic formulas.
In a state exam I took I had to figure the volume and surface area of a doughnut.
For more laps you would multiply them times C, T can be anything.
If you know R all you need is T

Re: Speed calculator, the Old School way.
Got mine. Thanks Mark!
I'll try to plug it in at RCG later tonight, unless I get beat by one of the other recipients.
Oh, regarding doing the math the analog way...would Speedos be appropriate attire for exceeding the 20-digit math?

Re: Speed calculator, the Old School way.
To help answer my methods... I taped both wheels in place where I wanted them aligned. Then I punched both together at the same time. But, if my memory serves me correct, at least one, if not both tools were just a bit too small depth wise to punch, and or crimp, but I carefully bent them to fit and had no ill effects.

Re: Speed calculator, the Old School way.
Regarding speed calculations, if one can determine the frequency note of the engine coming and leaving, could use the Doppler equation to figure out the traveling speed of the plane.
Speaking of speed, I came across this R/C speed plane video, seems to be traveling as fast as the pulse jet R/C planes someone did in northern Europe, forgot which country. He smoked the power system that ended the flight, but truly amazing speeds one can achieve with an electric motor.

Scientific method here, manufacturer rates maximum allowable current with adequate ventilation provided for both motor, ESC and battery pack. Exceed those for any of those components for an extended time, and she breaks.roddie wrote:Yuhh.... oh yuhh... it's broken...
Certainly a hall of shame moment, but I enjoyed the flight speeds the pilot achieved with his electric system.
