Small Hole on LH Side of Cox .049 Case
I have two crankcases that have a small maybe about 1mm or about 1/25th of an inch hole drilled in them on the LH web of the crankcase in the center. What was that for? Why did Cox drill those holes? For throttle or something?
Thanks

Without pictures, as well as NOT being an expert, I will guess that someone was trying or going to try to pressurize it? The above guess would only be if you got these engines used, cause if you owned them since new, you would know if you drilled them or not...

It's not through the crankcase only through the machined ear of it. Exactly in the center and aligned. Appears factory done? Diameter large enough for a wire hook to go through. Spent the mustang planes have a deflector shield or something? Just curious. Motor runs super. Just wonder why the holes? Supplied from different places and times. Not same person.

Ok. I do believe that I know exactly what you are talking about. Someone here more knowledgable will chime in I hope to tell you. I do remember seeing and reading about it, or something similar before, but cannot remember what it was from.

Re: Small Hole on LH Side of Cox .049 Case
The hole is for a throttle spring, used on the Miss America plane. I have one of those crankcases with the spring still attached.
Re: Small Hole on LH Side of Cox .049 Case
If it's what I think it is, it's a spring hole for the throttle ring on a throttle equipped .049 engine. I'll see if I can dig up a picture, but I had one of the cases once, and I can't find it anymore. I think I gave it away on a trainer to a guy at work.

Re: Small Hole on LH Side of Cox .049 Case
Hi Guys
Yes that is what I thought. Although the position of the hole on both of my blocks that have the holes are in the very center of the block casting. Not to the front 1/3 as in the picture. However I think you're right it was to fix a throttle spring similar to what was illustrated in the picture.
Thanks!!
