New dude here with .020
Hello All:
One of my vast collection of three Cox motors is something I can't find discussed on this forum. It's clearly a Pee Wee product motor with a hybrid mount. In order to use it, I'll need to drill holes to mount it on a firewall. But I don't want to alter something that might be unusual or of interest to others. I've had no luck posting a photo here, so I'm hoping a verbal description will do.
It has no aluminum tank like most Pee Wees, so a separate fuel tank is needed to run this baby. The 4.5" prop is orange. A permanently attached spark screen surrounds the cylinder and covers the exhaust ports. The crankcase is fitted to an orange plastic back, which contains the NVA and the reed valve assembly. The air intake is located in the center of the orange back without a screen. It looks like the back is designed to fit a very specialized application (car, plane or heli?).
Any idea? I await whatever wisdom appears here.
Thanks!

Sounds like a helicopter mount. It can be modified, it’s not a super rare piece.

Welcome to the forum, Dave. There's a minimum number of posts required or amount of time in the forum before photo privileges are granted (automatically I believe). I don't know the exact count.DaveyMo wrote:I've had no luck posting a photo here, so I'm hoping a verbal description will do.
I think this was done to eliminate trolling and spam.
Participate in the forum a little, and the photo privilege will come.
Yes, I've seen those product engines being sold on E-Bay as donor engines. (RTF helicopter got destroyed and that is what is left.)

Welcome to the Forum DaveyMo !! Are you just looking to run it ? If so what is it you need to drill out on the backplate ?

Re: New dude here with .020
What a nice welcome. Motorheads are the best!
The previous owner had it glued to a plywood mount in a styro plane. No accommodation was made for the air breather, so it couldn't have run at all!
So 'tis a Sky Copter motor! Great to know. Nice still shots of a beautiful example, Kim. Ditto on the video. Those guys look like they were having some great fun. And Ron, the fact that it's not rare will encourage me to light it up. It looks like a standard Pee Wee tank would stand in nicely for the orange heli mount when I run it, Eric. Better than drilling out the mount.
George: Ah, good to hear that it wasn't operator malfunction preventing me from posting photos. I'm good with whatever it takes to squelch the spam impulse. Keep up the good work.
Good to be part of an active on-line bunch here. Thanks to all again for the help. I'll certainly stay in touch.

The helicopter backplate is 2 pieces. If using both pieces then you can screw it tight to the firewall as there is a molded in air intake slot on the rear piece.

Jason and Mark:
Thanks for the replies.
The motor came with only the front part, Jason. Pity the poor soul who sealed the plate against the firewall; accordingly, the starter spring looks like it has had lots of overwinding abuse!
Very good link, Mark, and a well-designed solution to the problem! Will do. This particular Pee Wee appealed to me because of its potential for extended runs. Much obliged.
Dave Mo...
PS: I thought the copper/beryllium reed on the .049 was thin until I came up against this waif!

Re: New dude here with .020
Some .020 engines came with larger (more windings) than the usual springs you see. They always look overwound, that may be what you have.

Mr. Cribbs:
Ah, that likely explains it! I've (temporarily) removed the spring as it looks ugly and will try to run the we tyke without it for now. Thanks!
