Information and Help Needed for Baby Bee .049 Engine
Greetings! I know my question may sound silly but I honestly don't know. I looked through some of the forum historical posts but didn't find answers for my specific issue. I have what I believe to be is and Baby Bee .049 that I'd like to use on my scratch built PT-19 but there's no screen over the/in the hole in the middle of the backplate. Is the screen necessary? Are they still available? Can the engine run without one? Thanks in advance.

The earliest versions of the Babe Bee did not have a screen over the inlet. Screen is mainly to keep debris out, but it is not essential. Neither my R/C Bee nor Ranger (white tank Dragonfly without throttle - muffler only.) One also removes the screen in hopping up their Sure Starts to drill inlet larger.

Looks good, Jim, you did well. I would have done something similar, used an existing PT-19, scaled to size if necessary, then use its outline to make. If you had a 1" thick balsa block, you could have also mimicked a Walt Musciano Scientific hollow log design fuselage.
And BTW, the Babe Bee will fly fine as-is without the FOD screen over the venturi opening.

Howdy George ! "Fly as-is", man that sounds just great to me . As for balsa block, believe me, I've got some .... quite a bit actually ! From back in the day, it seems like I remember those hollowed out fuselages . Actually, I had forgotten all about them until you reminded me their existence. Heck, I may have even built one back in the day, I just don't remember but I do remember building a couple of those Scientific kits. I s'pose, I could have replicated one but with all that's going on around here, I didn't want to have my back up against the clock .GallopingGhostler wrote:Looks good, Jim, you did well. Jim, the fact you got started with a profile is definite a way to go, and there's nothing wrong with that. Back in high school in early 1970's I made my own Grumman 18" wingspan F4F Wildcat profile from a scaled up 3 view in a book, powered it with a Cox .049 postage stamp product donor engine and Perfect metal wedge tank. There's a lot of freedom in scratch building.

For Modelbuilder 49 Jim;
There is a guy in New Mexico reproducing a few of the Scientific kits if you are so inclined. They are lasercut, and practically drop out of the sheets!
He sells the profile fuselage, built up wing kits...the Typhoon and FW190, and he sells the box-fuselage with plastic turtlenecks and built up wings...the Zero, P-40 Red Tiger, Hellcat, and Dauntless. Also does a run of Sterlings, out of production WWI Guillows, etc. No Financial Interest. Check out Dave Cowell aka DPCModels:

If you want to scratch build a more performance oriented plane, I have scans of parts and plans for the Scientific P-40 21" symmetric airfoil profile kit, and the 24" Super Mustang of similar construction. I put an AP .061 in my P-40...hang on to THAT handle!
Oh, and great job on the PT-19! Screw that Babe Bee to it and sling it around the circle. I look forward to the finished project.
