It is! He was an amazing pilot, passionate modeler, and great friend. We will be celebrating his life at SMALL.

Well, I wish I'd known that while we were all there. You just never know who you're visiting with!
Celebrating his life at S.M.A.L.L. sounds great.
Maybe this will get me going with a visit to one of my friends I've been meaning to catch up with. He flew F-8 Crusaders over North Vietnam, and has agreed to sit down with me and a recorder to save some of his stories.
Got to cherish these guys.

Free Flight - Lost Hills, CA
With SMALL and the Sig R/C Fly-In a little more than a month away, I had to spend some time around running Cox engines last weekend to hold me over.
Here's a link below to my RCGroups blog with lots of photos featuring 1/4 - 1/2A free flight models at Lost Hills, CA, last weekend. Pretty impressive models and a great bunch of folks.

I am a loner whenever I fly and may be much poorer equipped (cold beverages included) but my COX engines start much faster though.

That's hilarious. It was a Tee Dee too, the easiest engine ever to crank, assuming it has some compression. In this case, I think there were too many boots in the outhouse.xplaneguy wrote:Just in case anyone needs a Cox Engine starting guide video for SMALL.

However, I think flying our beloved tiny planes only once a year contributes to the problem too. I say this after watching one of my revered modeling minds struggle with a Tee Dee on an immaculately build 40 year old Golden Hawk out at the fort. He regularly flies every kind of engine ever built since 1940, always with easy dependable starts, but is madly ham-handed with the needle and (over)priming methods on the baby engines.
One day, I just couldn't sit quietly any more and he agreed to let me have a go. I closed the needle, turned the venturi pointing down, and rocked the prop a few times to push the fuel back down the bypasses and out of the combustion chamber and onto the ground. Then flipped till it showed life. Opened the needle, back-flipped, and off she lit.
I think Tee Bee is one of our old RCGroups buddies and that was a great video.
Maybe I should flood the snot out of a TD and do a serious video on quick flood recovery. It works as well on flooded big ones too.

Re: S.M.A.L.L. 2017 !! The Boys Are Back in Town !
Eric-We have a 30' x 90' hangar next to our home and I desperately need to thin out the fleet...it's out of control! There's foam everywhere!!!
Thanks Daryll and Kim! The A-10 is a kick to fly!
The award photo was taken by my daughter Evelyn, so it's all her fault for granting use to Motion RC. I wonder if she made anything on that deal?? Hmmmm!! Heck, she must have....Motion RC used it in the June issue of Model Airplane News as well. All kidding aside, she took a beautiful photo. Great job Eve!
To be honest, I still feel a bit weird about awards since I don't seek them or fly competitively. I just love the hobby and thank God every day for good health and financial means to still enjoy model aviation, almost weekly. I know how proud Evelyn was seeing Dad in magazines and receiving awards, so I have to put my hang ups aside and just inspire her to reach for her dreams and make them reality.
For the record, you guys inspire me all the time, and it's hard to put into words how thrilled I am to have friends around the world who love Cox Engines as much as I do. That is truly a blessing!

Re: S.M.A.L.L. 2017 !! The Boys Are Back in Town !
Actually, the Motion RC website clearly states, "Motion RC and Freewing Models are very proud to announce the world’s largest and most definitive foam electric PNP A-10 Thunderbolt RC model aircraft in the world!" PNP means plug and play, which is ready to fly out of the box with little assembly model. There are other larger A-10's out there, mostly scratch-built or turbine fiberglass models but not in the mass production foam electric PNP class. This model is the largest in that arena.
Yeah, those indoor A-10's are sweet!

Isn't that the truth! I'm planning to retire early just to have MORE time for travel and toys, before I get too old and can't see. Wish me luck!

Sight and mobility (as much of thumbs as the legs)...what it's all about. Not 'he who dies with the most toys wins', but 'he who can play right up to the end'.
Man, do I get philosophical at the end of the day when I'm totally shot...

Philosophical or not, shot or not, I agree. As much as I have to constantly move toys in the garage, if I never played with them then they would have just been another source of work. Well said Kim!
