Adopted !!Storage Unit Find: Cherokee'ish Low-Winger...Free to a Good Home
Got a chance to look over and clean a little on one of the storage locker models I got a few weeks ago. One of the better-condition ones is the this 42 inch span, low-wing Cherokee-looking plane. Figure a .15-25 would fly it as a sport plane. Like a lot of the Old School types, the stabilizer is rubberbanded to the tail, so it can be taken down to a pretty narrow package for traveling.
The exaggerated control horns give an idea of the radios of the time, and the need to calm down their throws. The aileron cables probably don't offer much 'push', and all the controls would probably need to be reworked...along with a new fuel tank.
Don't want any money for it...just figuring how to get it to it's new owner will be the trick.
First P.M. gets it.

Man, I don't know. It's the wing that's the trouble maker. I got to go to the airport tomorrow, and see if I can get a box to fit it, then have my post office guy give me an estimate.
Also, I'll be at the S.M.A.L.L. Fly-In at Little Rock this summer. I could haul it there and do a transfer if you got a friend close to you that's going.

I can't imagine shipping a 42" wing alone.. without the risk of damage.. unless it was "crated" using furring-strips with corner-braces. That would no-doubt be expensive.

Yeah...that's the problem with any of these planes...the shipping verses the value of the plane is probably gonna be rough. 'Course, if I make another run to the Air Force Museum in Dayton, maybe Phil could just meet me there !

It will be a few weeks before I get out to there again at the earliest. Dayton is a mere 3 hours away. Last week was spring break. I always have kids in tow...
Don't take my speaking first as a commitment here. If someone else can make it happen then go for it. (I am being realistic on a nice looking plane that is a stretch away.)

The ARF RingMaster from Mike Griffin in Alabama made it to me in Texas well packaged and not molested for I think $13 or $18
I am buying a larger 55" WS fully built model from another source and it will ship in a mirror crate (reinforced cardboard) for aprox $38
The RM arf wing (45"s) and fuselage were just bubble wrapped seperatly , loose parts in a big baggie, and the rest was crumpled newspapaer

Thanks Fred! There's an idea about how much it will cost to ship.

To me that plane looks like a pound puppy sitting at the front of it's cage crying out for a new home. I'm putting $35 in an envelope and sending it your way Kim. Ought to cover mailing/packing but none of your aggravation in getting it ready to ship.
Ship to: The old folks home for used model airplanes.
You have my address... and thanks

May I throw my 2 cents in as a guide? I do a fair amount of custom building for folks around the country and when it came time to ship finished models both planes and model ships, I've gotten boxes for the models from my local U-Haul, bubble wrapped and stuffed with newspaper then shipped the boxes via Greyhound for very reasonable cost versus UPS and so far I've had no complaints or damaged items.

Yes there are several ways to skin this cat...
I might add: a few years back we had the bad examples here on FedX or UPS crushing boxes....(the great combat plane fiasco)
In the last two years I have bought a lot and shipped a lot using USPS.... they are now cheaper and much more reliable (from a damage point of view) than DHL, UPS, FedX in my opinion
Also if you need to get some real good boxes to ship a ARF typical broken down plane with less than 48" WS.... order a bunch of 48" wood and other stuff from Sig.... I have two of these and sent a complete plane and several kits to Seattle in one
48" x 10" x 10" ( 13" diagonal fits a wide(ish) wing) and shipped for $21

I too find USPS far better as far as damage than the others, UPS will damage a brick, never had anything delivered by UPS that wasn't damaged.
If an eBay seller uses UPS I won't even think of a bid. A strong box and good padding helps.

My toes are fine, no safety toe shoes needed either. I did say earlier that if someone could make it happen, they should. I do appreciate the double check.

Well, you're probably gonna get entertained a bunch more as I get time to sort through these orphans out in my shed !!
It IS cool to think that some of these ole crates (note the vintage reference) could fly again !

Yup, This ole crate (Aircrate) will fly again. But I think I will let my son with younger eyes and nerves take it up first to ensure it's trimmed out. I love this old thing and don't want to see it busted up. My plan is to fuel it up for a couple of turns around the old block-head before it sputters out and I can guide it down without the dizzys. The engine, an Enya .09 is the same one that came on it.
I'm pretty happy with the Scout too.
Can't wait to get the "Cherokee'ish" too. I really like the full fuselage and the trim job. The builder had talent and I will try to do it justice.
I still have this F4U Corsair to finish. I was going to do it R/C, but I don't think I could handle it anymore, so I'm trying to figure out how to mod it for C/L. Locating the Bell crank over that bent wing is a problem.

It's a Sterling Fledgling Eric, I built it over 40 years ago. I tried to fly the wings off it but couldn't. Probably my most air time model. It's got an Enya .29 sitting up front that starts on the first flip, well broken in.

Great Collection! Recalling a quote from a long ago issue of Sport Aviation, "Old airplanes never die, they just sit in hangars and wait." ...or basements or garages or lofts or attics...and the occasional storage unit!

There are a few more stuffed back there too. I built cubbies all around the loft when I finished it in. There are models stuffed every place up there.
Just like the rest of us, we get an empty hole we fill it with something.
