"With friends like this............I feel blessed!" My new engine.
I went to a RC float fly this weekend and a good, no GREAT, friend gave me this engine. It doesn't look to even been mounted. It's a little out of my league, but I think its a .15 Sportsman. My son thinks its an .09, of course neither of us have held either one.

nice condition. The only thing missing is the spring starter. If it truly is new it be best to sell or trade for a runner. But that's the collector in me talking. Avoid electric starters on this engine. There isn't a thrust washer used between the case and drive plate.
If you do run it be sure to sign up for the CEF loaner 15 piston reset tool. You're going to eventually need it.

You can ebay source by watching for a spring starter to show up. Some came with aftermarket exhaust throttles if you want to go RC. Can source a TD .15 spinner nut for a elect. starter too.

These springs show up on ebay from time to time as OEM parts I do deep searches looking for all Cox related products as some folks don't list in the right category. A spring this size is neat to operate lol first time I loaded that big prop up was a real treat and the second and third and so on.

I'll have to find a starter spring for it.
Getback- your right, he didn't give it to me to look at.
I wonder what plane I should match it up with? My first thought would be the Sig Akromaster. Maybe a Flying Clown?

Do you guys think the Sportsman would fly a Jr Ringmaster? I usually fly them on an OS 15FP.

I was hoping to learn something and be able to answer your question, but I'm still not sure. I started looking at mh-aerotools.de and then Sceptreflight.net, but can't find any good power ratings.duke.johnson wrote:Do you guys think the Sportsman would fly a Jr Ringmaster? I did see one report on the slightly more powerful Olympic .15 claiming .287bhp@16,500 rpm. And .72bhp/ounce. I think both are pretty impressive engines. My guess is yes, it would pull the Ringmaster through loops and wingovers. The smaller but similar designed Space Hopper .049 is said to be nearly as powerful as an early Tee Dee .049, if that's any sort of clue. It's hard for me to believe the Sportsman can out-pull an OS .15fp though. The LA .15 has .410bhp@ 17,000 rpm.
That's all I've got. Not much help though.

http://www.sceptreflight.com/Model%20Engine%20Tests/Cox%20Olympic%20and%20Sportsman.html
Link will show it's power I have some Cox props made for the Sportsman they had them pitched for a CL plane.
Props are 6x6 for a CL Comanche
Year 1959:
8x4 at 13k
8x3 at 15k
Modern props at say 15% Nitro:
7x5 APC 14.6K (guess)
7x4 APC 15.8k
Olympic puts out an extra 500+ rpm in general as per the link.
Check out the weights: Shown with the Cox 6x6
7.4oz vs 4.72oz (less without the throttle)

Spring
Hi Duke,
Found a spring for the .15 along with some other parts . I have 2 needle valves and springs #1109 ,1 reed valve #1108 , 1 reed retainer#1107, 1propscrewand washer #1119 and what could be a muffler for the .15
but missing the spring steel part that goes around the out side ( controls exhaust flow and noise ).except for the muffler and spring everything is in the original packing envelopes . I would be willing to sell or trade .
