Re: Cox .049 Space Hopper
How much were you looking to get for it? Are they more powerful than a cox ranger .049? How do they compare to a medallion or tee dee? I was interested in one for my cox rc pt_19. I want something more powerful than the stock .049 ranger but I don't want to cut the cowl on my plane so that's why I don't want a medallion or tee dee. Thanx for your time and help!

Re: Cox .049 Space Hopper
The cox Space Hopper is slightly less powerful than the Cox Tee Dee engine. The Dan Sitter collectors manual says about 2K RPM less, which seems about right from my experience. I liken the Spacehopper to a Blackwidow with regard to power, but there are a lot of variables that go into RPM figures, and there are people on this forum who can get Tee Dee RPM numbers out of a Black Widow, so take that for what it is worth. I have bought and tested a couple of these engines (both used), and they both turn a 5X4 prop at around 17K - 18K RPM. They are pretty easy to start too. From my experience. Andy

Re: Cox .049 Space Hopper
It sounds like you want a good used engine that can be mounted and enjoyed rather than an unused collector engine priced accordingly.
They do show up from time to time on ebay.

You could modify the current engine with this:
http://coxengines.ca/cox-.049-glow-plug-adapter-insert-style.html
And this:
http://coxengines.ca/cox-.049-tee-dee-cylinder-and-piston.html
And see a significant performance gain.

Performance is basically as Andy has stated and modellers generally purchase NIB Thermal Hoppers for collection purposes.
As per listing details, our price is $295. However, we offered the engine to other prospective buyers and it was sold in the meantime to a South African collector, sorry.
If you are looking for a performance engine to use on your aircraft, please see our performance engine section here:

Re: Cox .049 Space Hopper
There would be a bit of work to rig up a space hopper mount for your PT.
What kind of cutting would you have to do to the cowl to mount a TD? Space hoppers are longer but share the same bolt pattern. Is the venturi the issue?
Lastly, there are ways to make the Ranger engine more peppy.

Re: Cox .049 Space Hopper
Thank you all for all your replies. I just joined the forum yesterday and I'm very impressed with everyone welcoming in the new guy. I think I will modify my ranger a bit. If a guy was going to do just 1 upgrade to a 049 what would be the best performance upgrade? Would it be a merlin head and adapter or a td piston/cylinder set? I'm just asking cause I have several projects going now including a gws formosa powered by a muffler equipped .15 medallion, gws formosa 2 powered by a .15 tee dee, cox rc pt_19 I bought from ebay (box in rough shape and original plastic bags has been removed from the parts inside so this is why I'm going to fly it, no worries I have a second rc pt 19 in mint collectors condition I am saving), a sig nitro rascal I am waiting for a norvel .074 for it and I have a cox spyder with a hot killer bee .049 and a ap .061 wasp I change out for time to time. A lot of new age flyers give me a hard time cause I am so hooked on the 1/2a stuff but this is what we had in the 80's & 90's, the original park flyers! Even with my modern parkzone planes I fly full throttle so I don't need a throttle d engine. The only difference between cox and parkzone planes for me is the Cox stuff is much more fun to me!

Re: Cox .049 Space Hopper
Best bang for your buck is get an SPI cylinder/piston set if your engine does not have such:
http://coxengines.ca/cox-.049-sub-induction-cylinder-piston-spi.html
and add a head conversion, such as this one:

Re: Cox .049 Space Hopper
What Bernie suggested will work, but you will have to lose the muffler if so equipped.

Re: Cox .049 Space Hopper
Sure no worries about the muffler if I can get more performance out of the engine! I have a cox ez bee/sky bird equipped with a muffler equipped .09 medallion that I am absolutely happy about the upgrade since it has transformed it into a whole new plane. The pt 19 wing feels a little heavy but the overall plane is not that heavy since I switch the original heavy rubber wheels out with 2 1/4 dubro super lite series foam wheels with grooves on the wheel like the original wheels were at fraction of the weight. I believe this upgrade along with the spi cylinder/ piston upgrade and modern day electronics my pt 19 should be a great flyer. My experience with the ranger/dragonfly tanks is they leak and I was wondering how I could prevent this from happening? I will upload my 1/2a collection as soon as I get everything finished.

Re: Cox .049 Space Hopper
The tanks should not leak and perhaps you need a new tank gasket, available here?

Re: Cox .049 Space Hopper
Do the starter springs slow down the rpm much or should I lose it?

Re: Cox .049 Space Hopper
The "no drag" version does not, the "cam" version reduces RPM by about 200 - 300.
