It appeared to make good speed too or was the camera frame rate, great landing!!!!!!

Definitely cool. Good to see a clean video of one flying. Three minutes on the engine run, too.

I don't remember if I've asked this before or not. Are the less than optimal flying qualities just because of the small elevator, the short coupling, the wing shape/area, or the C.G.?

I had waited almost 50 years to make that flight, and wished I had made the attempt sooner. Always wanted to do it when my little brother came home for visits but it never happened. Took a while to put a airplane together that I thought would stay together for the flight, and didn't want to use my "nicer" examples in case things went as they did on my first attempt! Meeting up with Kim and Ron Cribbs for the Cox PT-19 was the final inspiration to get the job done, but the engine wouldn't run that day. Those red back plate RTF engines used a black tube to hold the needle valve, and they tended to leak. I finally noticed how loose the needle was and switched back plates. I remember reading some where a long time ago that this was an issue and the tubes might be able to be shrunk with a heat gun. I tried slipping a piece of fuel line over it and had no success. The engine runs sweat! I was pretty nervous when Steve Smith let the thing loose and didn't know what to expect. I had been flying some of the other guys 1/2A scale WW-1 models that were pretty tricky to  fly so I was warmed up and ready for anything! But there was nothing to stress about! It took off all by itself. The handle was a bit off, and it was just a bit touchy and I need to narrow down the line spacing. But man I still can't believe how well it flew! We flew it again later in the day and I adjusted the handle for neutral and it was just as nice! The glide is really incredible, and I'm glad I was flying over pavement. I live just off a cul-de-sac and will be putting up some flights with it there when opportunity permits. The lines were whatever came on a standard spool of 1/2A flying line. I think they were Goldberg and 52 ft total length so that makes it 26 feet. I'll measure exactly the next chance I get. I have parts for another one that I will get busy repairing and making sure that I can bolt together properly and get it ready to fly. I also have some Corsairs, a Skyraider, and a P-40 that will get a chance to excersise their wings! I'll be looking for a few extra pieces and parts to make them as complete as possible for the flights. Stay tuned for further developments as they become available! And thanks to everyone for the nice comments, and especially to Fred Cronenwent of our club for taking and putting up the video!

Thanks so much for posting that, Dan. I started off with a Stuka the same way you and so many of us did. After Dad saved me with a PT-19 so I could learn to fly, and then a P-40 from Mom one birthday, I bought another Stuka just so I could know it hadn't whipped me. I flew it lots of times till it finally just cracked up bit by bit. It's really a beautiful plane and I'd love to have one in my fleet today.

That was great entertainment. I hope you'll drop into CEF once in a while. I've read many of your posts over at SH. Good to see you here.
