A toy comes ready to use out of the box; a model requires some thought and skill to construct before flying.

Which is YOUR preference?

I like that.

A toy is for fun and a model is a representation of something that can be used for other things, at different scales.  No reason a model cannot also be a toy (or the other way around).  No reason the model has to be smaller (or larger) than an application for the principles.

My definition of "Toy" is anything that doesn't serve to put food on the table, heat in the house, or electricity to the outlets...or anything else that doesn't assist my base existence.

For me, it's not an offensive term in itself, though sometimes it's intended that way. My Barrett Rifles, down to my Crossman BB gun are all "Toys" in that they have yet to serve any function beyond my having fun, which is STILL completely respectable in my view. They create fun and great times in my life.

I try never to demean another man's pursuits or passions, be they RTF's or hand-built creations, because, in the end, it IS purely a matter of perspective. I would have to go no distance at all to find someone who would dismiss this, or any other forum of it's kind as "Goofy Old Men Playing With Their Toys".

We would, of course, argue that they simply don't understand our passions and what we think is cool...and we'd be right...but that blade cuts both ways....so it's a danger to one's integrity to judge too harshly or quickly.

The difference between a toy and a model Empty Re: The difference between a toy and a model

Post  roddie Sun Jan 12, 2014 9:38 am

In one case.. I took the engine out of the toy.. because I could not use the toy as designed, at my flying area. The toy in question is my Cox Cosmic-Wind. To me; a good flight consists of a R.O.G. take-off... the "flight" itself... and the landing; where the model rolls to a stop. The 16" span Cosmic-Wind flies very fast.. is HEAVY.. and has small wheels and wheel-pants. It needs a smooth paved circle for a flight like that. (as will our CEF Speed Contest models!)

My Cox PT19 was more fun to fly... and is "ready to fly" currently... (it's on it's 2nd fuse) Incidentally... popular lately; are those small multi-colored rubber-bands for making bracelets.. and I was curious how they'd work for banding the Cox planes together? I have been using similar size silicone rubber hair-bands on mine.

"Balsa flies BETTER" is an understatement! I especially love to build my own designs using it... and the choosing of other materials involved with a model's construction too.. to make it as strong... yet as light as possible. It's definitely the building part that I enjoy the most.

A flying model is not a toy. A flying model must be designed fly... Has anyone ever see the movie "The Flight of the Phoenix" with Ernest Borgnine? A remote desert plane crash forces the survivors to entrust in one of the passengers' aircraft design skills, to re-build the wreck, and attempt to fly it back to civilization before they all starve to death. It is revealed midway into the re-build; that this man is a "model designer" when someone see's him reading a model magazine in which he has a published article..  which causes skepticism amongst the survivors.. It's a great movie!

A "Model" is how you describe it to your friends. A "Toy" is how your wife describes it to HER friends.

On of my all time favorite movies. I absolutely refused to watch even the trailers for the remake a few years ago.

I didn't know there was a remake. It's based on an actual event, is it not?

Book. (google is wonderful sometimes)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Flight_of_the_Phoenix

I don't think it is based on actual events, even though the concept is plausible, though far fetched.

Back to planes... A toy can become a model:

It's the foam glider from Playmobil. I got one still in the box. I want to put a Pee Wee on it for FF. I don't know if it should be nose fitted or with a power pod?

My Dad found this at a tag sale for $2 last Fall and gave it to me... it has never been flown. It's an Air Hogs free-flight plane, has 2 sets of wings and is powered by compressed air. All the parts are in the box. It's called a "Visionary" and is no longer in production. This was the "toy"... that put Air hogs "on the map"... the rest is history.

see this link for the story

This is the plane my Dad gave me

That Air Hog is pretty cool. Cool kid too. I wonder if it would run on CO2 or if the thermal stress would destroy it. Probably ice it up.
