You all made stunning airplanes: Bearcat, Mustang, Corsair, an exotic flying Bugatti and the others I forgot to mention. I'm again way behind. I finished the second part of the cowl and need more hands to my body to hold it all in place and take a picture.

reed speed 2014 - CEF speed contest Design Discussions - Page 23 Imgp7611

Today, I started making the nose block using 6mm thick balsa. I didn't use very soft wood as it needs a lot of manipulating and turning around. With an exacto chisel, I made the air intake. After drawing the intake with a pencil, I cut along the lines straight into the wood with a chisel and a knife for the curves. Then I removed the wood bit by bit. I finished with sanding the sides slightly.

Next job is to make the hole for the engine and sanding the outer edges.

Wow great modelling Lieven, I'm getting pleasure just looking at it. Thats the great thing about real aeromedelling, building the model is a pleasure in itself, Then you get the pleasure of flying it, a win/win situation. Well I've ordered the bits to build a bladder tank from Texas Timers. Are whats in the attatched pic postage backplates? If so, I just remove the spray bar and put it into my Killer Bee backplate. Obviously I wont do it to the metal postage stamp backplate.

Thats some really good building, I can't wait to see the completed plane. You've now inspired me to build a Geebee R3. I know its not ellible for our comp, but it will be intresting to see if having learned a bit about building a 1/2A speed model. I can make it faster than my Bugatti.

Thanks guys, That Gee Bee would be a nice project indeed. Very streamlined, it would merit a full fuselage made of laminated balsa.

I had some time this morning to fiddle a bit on the cowl. Here pictures of the first trials to fit everything with the engine mounted.

That's Radical!!! A single tiny "Rare-Earth" magnet and Tin strip/tab "glued-in" would hold it shut.

Very cool!!!

I ordered a stack of 1x3 mm rare earth magnets off ebay for stuff not to different from that awesome "bonnet"

Nothing wrong with that prop that a saw, and a re-balancing won't fix.

Hi Lieven,

Great build! When you get'er all done, you need to get some little plastic guys and take a photo of them working on the engine with the 'bonnet' up!

I'll post here so as not to over tax the roll call.
In the roll call thread, Roddie suggested scoping the engine note. In the attic I have an old tube Eico scope I built back in the '70s. It probably still works. Its calibration surely isn't perfect but I can get it down and burn it in for a couple of days to use if no one else has one. Shoot, there's probably an app, now that I think about it.

Yea...  Embarassed I just shot Jim a PM apologizing about that... It started as a "video ability" recommendation... and I got carried away.

anyone got any more done than me? (I hope...) I'm tempted to build a heated-box/enclosure/spray booth, just so I can paint this darn thing! Laughing It sure wouldn't have to be very big for this model. My wife gets migraines just smelling WD40.  Crying or Very sad so I'd have to vent it out of my basement workshop somehow.
