Old Cox Bee

Old Cox Bee
Been working on an old Bee like in the photo, I need a glow head like in the photo to finish.
I have many things to trade, old W heads, new HC Cox heads. Photo is from Marks page, thanks Mark.

I may have one. I'll have to look. Does it need to be pristine?

Working I assume? Would you happen to have one of those early small diameter heads? I have one that is blown.

Re: Old Cox Bee
Is this what you are looking for? The head looks the same as the one in your pic. The thread is of the standard variety. The glow element looks haggard, but it still glows bright.
Let me know.....

Re: Old Cox Bee
Hi, that head will work fine, thanks.
After much study on Marks site the first style larger dia. head had a small fin around the center electrode.
Soon after the fin was gone but there was a step down in place of the fin. Like the one you have pictured.
Soon after that the step was removed, like the one on the left in the second photo. There it is, clear as mud.
The head on the right in the second photo is the one you have

Re: Old Cox Bee
Would the first version have the backplate without the "Made in USA" and no screen?

Re: Old Cox Bee
Correct, it should not have made in USA or intake screen. It should have the bright finish and the narrow intake channel on the back.

Re: Old Cox Bee
Here's a pic of backplates (L-R) mid-sixties with pinned screen and Made in USA, c.1965, first version, clear dichromatic plated (c. 1957) and finally a engine from a 1911 Curtis Pusher (c. 1961) notice the pushed in screen, This was the first time Cox tried to install a air filter, these usually fell out or were easily removed by the owners back when they were new, so you don't see them today. Also, notice the black rubber fuel tubing, if you se a old style backplate with this, don't think its been replaced that what Leroy used the first couple years.
Re: Old Cox Bee
Thanks Ron, the head is nice on this old Bee. It was in rough shape when I dug it out of my box of crap.
A little 2000 wet or dry and 0000 steel wool brought it back. It has the 4 piece piston and old backplate.
Ready to run again, it has not been run much.

Re: Old Cox Bee
Ran the old Bee today, had some issues with the needle but it started right up.
Had to flip it backwards to run it the right rotation. Got to look into the issues to smooth it out, not bad for 55 years old.

Re: Old Cox Bee
Looks like it's running OK. I was going to say the head I gave you might be causing the stutter, but it looks like you switched it out.
Maybe run some compressed air through the backplate again? Looks like a real gem!

Re: Old Cox Bee
Thanks guys, the old Bee goes with my old Golden Bee, it has 4 piece piston also.
Think I'll display them together. Thanks Ron for the nice plug, ran it with a newer head to save the old one.
