Cox .049 mufflers for sale
We are currently getting quotes for muffler manufacturing but are unsure if we should continue with such.
Over and over we have seen requests for us to manufacture mufflers and, now that we have secured a small supply from a 3rd. party (OEM Cox as per picture), for sale at $16.95/each, we are faced with the reality that they are not brisk sellers. Hence we wonder why we should invest $8,000 to stock 1,000 of them.

Re: Cox .049 mufflers for sale
I can only speak for myself Bernie. I have but one muffler that sits unused. Why? Because it doesn't make it that quiet and most my engines have SPI.
I speak from a flyers standpoint, A collector may need one to finish a QRC or something along those lines.
$16.95 is pricey, just being honest. Pricey for me anyway. Maybe you could run a poll before you commit and see if the interest is really there.
Now I would pay $16.95 for a metal BW backplate...........

Re: Cox .049 mufflers for sale
I would offer the spring steel adjuster and top cap instead of the whole muffler... my $0.02
Then if it warrants, make the muffler body at a later date.

Re: Cox .049 mufflers for sale
The version depicted in the OP would cost $22 - $25 retail. The problem is the spring and the stack. The muffler body is the inexpensive part to make.
I agree that $16.95 is expensive but not only did we do a poll (and got lots of requests) but we also got well over 200 requests for these last year.
I guess what people are trying to say is that they would like to buy mufflers at sub-$10 and that is not going to happen as the best price we got was $9/1,000 from China.
However, we are getting this version below quoted in the hopes we can offer one for $12.95. But then again, I really wonder....
The same thing happend with many products we made upon request (and we are sitting on piles of them), will likely happen with a TD engine and will certainly happen with a PT-19 RTF, and it's not encouraging. For us to manufacture a product, there have to be buyers...

I would think this one would be really limited as I think it was only on the helicopters from the 90s???
Re: Cox .049 mufflers for sale
I agree, I don't see it as a big seller. I've never ran a muffler on a .049, I have on a .020 and it does really work well.
Re: Cox .049 mufflers for sale
You can put that muffler on any Cox 049 engine and it is the least expensive one to make.
It is especially the Europeans that are requesting mufflers.

Re: Cox .049 mufflers for sale
It might not be a bad idea to create a poll on the proposed various products: A) I would likely buy, or B) I would not likely buy.
example:
PT-19 'ARF' (unfinished kit, plain box, no engine or engine optional) A) I would likely buy!
.049 Muffler B) I would not likley buy.

Re: Cox .049 mufflers for sale
I've never ran one, I'd like to see a decibel count to see if it actually works. I may have to try that tonight, I have an iphone app for that
Re: Cox .049 mufflers for sale
Hello all,
So I find the idea with the survey very good. Then you can see if the people would buy the muffler. The muffler makes the engine not much quieter, but the exhaust fumes least to a certain point. I myself have one of these and I'm very satisfied. If you would sell the muffler, I would also buy another one. I've a couple motors.
With friendly greetings

Re: Cox .049 mufflers for sale
Unfortunately, a poll on the forum with 20 yes votes does not really translate into 1,000 sales aver a span of two years.
Confidence is given when a couple hundred willing buyers at XX dollars pre-commit. This will not happen here and is not expected.
We simply started the thread because, on this forum, there have been many requests for mufflers. Now we have like 20 for sale and the sales are not happening here although we are confident that they will sell once listed in our shop.
The gist of the thread was also to demonstrate that we, almost daily, receive requests like "why don't you guys make ...."
We have at least a dozen items we made as a result of the requests that will make for nice coffin decorations

Re: Cox .049 mufflers for sale
Initially last year I was on a mission to get mufflers for all my Cox engines as my club required it as do most municipal flying fields... THEN I won the argument and got most local site and our club rules to exclude 1/2a from the AMA and other restrictive Db limits
Long way to say, I am not looking to muffle these buggers any more
I modified a few Enya .049 and .061 mufflers for Cox cylinders, as well as ran the Big Mig with and without muffler...in every case the Db reduction was not very evident BUT the RPM, power output, and prime start usability was negatively impacted
The exception being the well designed muffler for the .05 RC.......go figure...If Bernie got a quote for it we would really be astonished at sale price

If you do run a test I think it should be performed to the European noise resctrction requirements that are imposed there. Many flying fields here seem to have different requirements but in the UK at leas there is somewhat of a standard.

Re: Cox .049 mufflers for sale
Excuse me for thinking out loud here....
Take a 5cc fuel tank, punch the appropriate diameter hole in the center to remove the venturi and side for the exhaust exit(or drill). Locate the appropriate size aluminum fender washer to fit inside the bowl at the desired level. Use a flare tool to create a bubble on a piece of appropriate size tubing near the end to act as a stop, then flare the tubing inside the fuel tank bowl - now muffler.
Now you have a muffler that hopefully uses off the shelf forming tools and parts made by an existing processes.

Re: Cox .049 mufflers for sale
Drilled out a damaged 5cc tank with a step drill, shaved with a razor knife the rest of the way. While the dimensions are uncanny with how close they are, the bowl interferes with both a back plate and a fuel tank since it is just too big.
I still think the idea of using off-the-shelf items to assemble a good looking and working muffler is still reasonable, but this idea isn't it.

If you look at this link you will see why this is becoming more and more applicable in the UK
http://www.flyingsites.co.uk/howto/noisereduct.htm
A limit of 81 dba is becoming (or has become the norm). Every 10dba is twice the noise.

Yep it's only my 09 RC that gets run on anything
Like a regular basis at the field.
At the last AGM we had to ban 'gassers' from
One of our fields cos most of the guys
Refused to fit proper canisters and we came
Within a gnats chuff of losing the site.

Re: Cox .049 mufflers for sale
What about a CNC muffler design that clamps to the cylinder instead of that expensive spring steel tooling required for the original Cox one.
I'm not suggesting the below design. Just another idea for a clamp muffler. This is more of an exhaust deflector. The exhaust chamber is pretty small in this design.

Neat idea but let's see what the quotes are for the one we submitted last week.
