BAZINGA !!! Rivets Lives !!!!!!!!
Finally got a beautiful evening to get Rivets and the Mini Stunt down to the airport for their first flights, along with bud Patrick's shakedown flight for his RTF Flite Streak.
The wind was up just a bit, so I didn't get the Rivets hooked up and ready to go 'till almost sunset. Even with Bad Boy screaming bloody murder, the Rivets made a leisurely takeoff run across the concrete, lifting into the air, and almost completing a full lap before all crap broke loose!
The down line simply dropped away, and Rivets pulled up and rolled into the circle with me yelling "Oh Crap!" in total disbelief all the way to it's impact! It smacked down on an almost vertical line, and scattered it's nose across the ramp. The concrete wasn't kind to the racer, and it kinda took the stuffing out of it's pilot also !!!! Still, Patrick and I collected every scrap of red plastic we could find, and I intend to re-piece the nose and mount for another flight, along with perusing ebay for a replacement snout.
The leadout and flying lines were in perfect shape, with the down-line's snap securely fastened closed, so the only thing I can figure was that I had just snagged the lead-out's loop along it's edge, with it not looped completely through the snap. Don't really know...this is about the most mysterious crash I've experienced!
We'd spent a lot of time in setting up Pat's new flying lines and logging time on his Flite Streak and my Shark, so I was a bit rushed to get Rivets going with enough light to run some video...and so, the adage "haste makes waste" came down with an iron fist !!!! I usually make these video flights the "Sole Event" of the day, and will probably return to that policy!!!
I wasn't in the mood to take "autopsy photos", but got video of the carnage, and will post it as soon as I retrain myself on how to edit footage from my sometimes-difficult Sony "Easy Cam"!
To add additional insult, the Pee Wee in the Mini Stunt decided to act up, barely dragging the little biplane around it's 20 foot circle. My mind had already demonstrated it's lack of brain cell activity, so the little green monster got cleaned up and stuck back in the van while it was still in one piece !
The good news is that Patrick's plane flew well, and my "Shark 15" cooperated as it was rung-out above the tarmac.

Sorry to hear that Kim, mega bummer. At least you are out there making things happen. How many guys have the guts to fly a collectible U/C plane? Not many. Of course that doesn't put the nose back together..........
I will keep an eye out on Ebay for you.

Yeah, the hazards that come with doing this stuff. What REALLY grinds me is that I smacked it simply by failing to properly connect my flying lines, which is about as basic a task as there is.
Just another painful notation in the "Book of Stuff You're Supposed to Know by Now" !

Thank you! I'll greatly appreciate any help that can get this sucker back together. I'm pretty sure that, through the magic of balsa, ply, CA, and my faithful Dremel tool, the original cowling will at least be able to return to the air, if not to it's former glory !

Hey, it happens. A person unknowingly gets in a bit of a rush with excitement and sometimes bad days occure.
What kind of snaps are you using Kim?. If they are the fishing style with the little dogled ends sticking out when closed I can see snagging just the plane eyelet with one of the doglegs and holding on for 1/2-3/4 lap. Low or failing lighting, looks like it snapped thru, you let go and it just is snagged there.
I had a Beech Staggerwing that I built up real nice do a 1/2 lap death plunge from slack lines and a horribly surging engine. Had it singing happily and as soon as it was released by my buddy it was all over but the cussing,,5-7 second flight. I still have it all gooped together with glue, never did fly it again.

Man, that is sad. I feel your pain. I hate that feeling I know you had. I've been the recipient of the haste award too many times. Not only sad, but S.A.D. I'll be waiting for that video. I'm glad the Shark flew like it's supposed to, it looks like a tough old bird. I wouldn't want to land inverted with that tall needle though.

Hi Kim,
Oh Crap!!! That's too bad! Sorry to hear, but at least you got it on film.
The Rivets is pretty heavy and would take a lap to get airborne. Search the video on youtube of the guy with the P-63 Wen-Mac Aircobra it's even worse.
Now even more bad news, the nose section, forgetaboutit, they're made of unobtaininum. You might find a basket case and get one from two.

Yeah that was my plan. I'd seen a pretty rough one about a year ago, so maybe one will turn up.
For the short time I had it in the air, it felt very much like the Super Sport I flew back in the 1990's...very "Truck-Like"!
I've also got some considerable time on my own Wen Mac Aracobra (what can I say?...I like 'Rock on a String' Airplanes!"), and agree that it flys much the same way, with the elevator "suggesting" pitch changes and the plane gradually responding!!! That sucker is in line to receive a Tee Dee in it's snout...and become a much faster "truck" !
Rivets will rise again...it's just meant to be !

Kim, you're a ROCK STAR!
Looking forward to the video. I'll also keep a eye out for Rivets parts. I'm sure it flew just like the Super Sport.

Kim,
I got that sick lump in my stomach as my heart broke for you. No matter how many times it has happened it still sucks! I hope you are able to get what you need to get it back up quickly and "relatively" inexpensively.

Kim:
The incident is yet another painful reminder to do a "pre-flight" inspection no matter how experienced the pilot.

Re: BAZINGA !!! Rivets Lives !!!!!!!!
Yeah, I don't take the value of collectible planes lightly, and it is a shame to smack one, but there's this other side of my personality that says, "If they don't fly, they might as well be cast from pewter (my Wen Mac Aracobra may qualify for this category...weight-wise!). It's still a better fate (in my view) to have them croak in action, rather than to just join their millions of counterparts in a land-fill somewhere.
For me, it's not enough to sit them on a shelf and talk about "how it was". Following this line, I usually scout for "runners" without box or paperwork, that can actually take me back to the sound, and mess, and tension of the days when these things were being sold to fly...which is really the Soul of my affection for them in the first place.
Another of my heroes, Cole Palen, was laughed at when he spent his life savings buying "junk" relic flying machines, then, years later, criticized for "putting priceless antiques at risk" by flying them. I highly relate to his need to have "real barking dogs", rather than a bunch of stuffed animals.
As you can see, I'm not shy about putting my ego aside and taking my lumps, along with the triumphs, and I quickly take the blame when I own it. As a friend of mine likes to say, "It's the farmer in the field that breaks the plow".
So, the Rivets will fly again, either with a new salvaged cowl or with the highly patched current one!

Like i said, OH CRAP!!!!
Thanks for posting it, it did bring back to life a couple brain cells that remember holding onto the handle of one of these red and yellow beauties many years ago!
I also noticed it looks like it was airborne in appx. 1/4 lap.
On a positive note, it flies fine from about :42 to about :48 on video (before the first O'crap) and if you just hit replay prior to that over and over, its all good!
One last comment, I thing it might of been engine problems as it looks like smoke coming out as its going down!
Re: BAZINGA !!! Rivets Lives !!!!!!!!
It does look like engine failure. Steam coming out of the exhaust, a blown head gasket breached the cooling system.
Mud... you can fly two planes at once. I've never tried that. I'm not ambidextrous at all.Mudhen wrote:I kept Cox in the black when learning to fly two-at-once. I went through so many PT-19's before I finally got it.
