Completed the "as found" Cox Golden Bee Piper Cub
A first for me. I always wanted to do a minimum clean-up of the type of model airplane balsa or plastic that that I usually buy. Normally I tear them down to parts and start from there. Not this time. I did a normal clean-up on the Golden Bee as it's not going back on, substituting instead a more appropriate vintage Babe Bee.
I repaired the horizontal stab and elevator with the broken parts that the seller included, but I did not add the back end of the rudder as I knew that I could never replicate the finish, then wiped the whole thing down with a microfiber towel. Any detergent, water, or solvent would deteriorate the finish especially the decals which I wanted to save.
Outside of that and the replacement Babe Bee it's as the seller sent it to me minus about a half inch of the lead-out's. The wheels are original, and I believe they came with the kit. Nasty, but I'm keeping them. Had to do extensive surgery on one to remove all the bubbles maybe from fuel being dripped on it.
Minor changes are sanding the rust off the landing gear, elevator control rod, and the lead-out's then coating them with Howard's wax. And the wheel collars are not the ones that were on it. Way too big for the original landing gear. Substituted from parts on hand.
As found.
Presently, not that much different.
Three coats of gloss clear.
Contrast
Yeah, the elevator works. Flyable.

I get it, and like it….Sometimes it’s nice to have bright shiny new and other times to preserve character…. You capture its moment in time that way…

Thanks, if just one person likes it, it was worth the effort. Earned a place on my display case.
Found an old used wooden prop. Kinda sets it off.

I think it fits in your collection well as a reminder what could be done with small engines after the rtf’s were crashed out… Looks great on the case behind those K&B’s…. High wing CL is kind of unique as well…

I'm thinking - struts. Yellow, dirty them up a bit.
The lovable, venerable, vulnerable Piper Cub.

You bet, New owner can add such upgrades and does no harm to the original patina… Certainly in context….Would add a lot to its profile-ness and be a bit more eye catchy…

Good point, upgrades. Looking at the picture above, I might as well build landing gear strut faring's too like I did on my hollow log Cyclone.
I would like to reduce the height of the landing gear by about 30% but the prop would not clear the ground, but if I went to a .020 prop.....................much more scale like as the originals prop is dwarfed by rest of the plane.
Looks like the struts tie in at about 5/8th length of the wing.

Looks good, Bob, congrats. Even if you had added the missing balsa on the rudder, then finish and paint, to me, it would have looked like one of those museum displayed, excavated Neanderthal skulls with sections of white plaster or gray epoxy filling gaps, to give the viewer a glimpse of imagination into what it may have looked like whole in its former glory.
Anyway, a job very well done.

I might do the rudder yet. The Farm implement yellow is a good match and I have learned how to blend in the patina. Just while the yellow is still wet, dust the black and it melds, then dust on some more yellow. Looks like an Alaska commuter Cub that has never had a wash job.

As far as I'm taking it.
Faring's "float" with the landing gear. Gear struts don't. Means splinters should this thing ever be flown. Heat shrink tubing forms the land gear shock absorber covers. May take the whole thing apart and give the frame a final coat of gloss clear.
Next. I still haven't found a Midwest P-40 C/L kit George. This one gets.............Suds!

Re: Completed the "as found" Cox Golden Bee Piper Cub
Bob, Midwest definitely had a half-A profile WW-2 series that competed with Sterling. I remembered looking at the pretty shrink wrapped kit boxes at the various hobby stores. It was more prolific in the 1970's. However, it seems that they never really caught on. Over time, it seems that Sterling Beginner series dominated. And, to find a kit seems to be rare as hen's teeth now. I went to Outerzone's RC Bookcase, but for some odd reason, of the magazines I viewed, many had the bulk portion of advertising removed. I found very few advertisements by Midwest, which is a shame.

Yes, I did a deep internet search trying to find one but only came up with a person on RC Groups that was looking for a C/L kit with no responses. Midwest did make a RC P-40 kit though. I can guess at the tail sections replacement dimensions but would rather have something more authentic to go by.
I did find replacement wooden wheels for it while looking around my stuff out in the garage.

Thanks, that's perfect. I saved it, enlarged it to scale and printed it out.

@duaneh 's plan shows a wingspan of 21 inches. Walt Musciano's Scientific P-40 profile with built up wing is also the same wingspan.
Outerzone: (oz12606) Curtiss P-40 Warhawk
Proportions should be similar or close enough that the elevator might work, IMO.

Bob, I am not familiar with that particular Sterling profile P-40 kit. Looks a touch larger for say a .09 to .15 engine, perhaps Ringmaster Jr. size? What are the details on it? Nice rebuild, by the way.
