Kind of crude but got it to tick over with a tube connected to input pipe using the breathalyzer method….. Loosely base on a Roy Clough Jr. design that was in Popular Science April 1946…. It is about.020 displacement…… Will try it on steam when I get a little more shop time….

i too am thinking about how I could make an engine work with steam My idea is complex but doable i want To use a cox engine and made a double action valve That would pressurize the piston back and forth The engine is quite simple I want to use an old .074 Modify an old broken glow plug To suply presure on top and made a new rear Intake witout valve just a conection for a tube I had thought with a .049 to use the fuel tank as a oiler reservoir to distribute the oil To the engine from the bottom using the fuel port inside its cylinder To lube upper parts the project is on hold du To lack of material To weld copper hi temp soldering stuf a bit expensive I would like to hear the opinion of someone who has experience with this type of engine.Especially if the exhaust port would be a problem or just a small loss of power or No ? Is it wort à test ? That engine cant run mutch it start but it has no power To low in compression so that wy i was. tinking of that engine as possible New Experiment Subjects Small Cox Logo

Hi David,

There is a bit of info here on the forum on attempting to make a Cox engine run on steam…. Just search “steam” and you’ll find them…..I’m sure it can be done with the right valving and timing….. I know they can be made to run on on CO2 so steam should work as well…. I’ve been watching your Fatal Flaw engine…. You have the skills to do this Smile

I hacked out a better flywheel from an electrical floor box cover…. Still have some finish work and balance to do.

A bit more info on the engine….. The plan called for 5/16 fishing rod ferrules for the piston and cylinder….. I used the cap on the eraser of a mechanical pencil and a 1/4” id pipe so my version is about 80% original size…. The connecting rod is a piece of # 12 copper wire….

I was also thinking about the tire valve. As à posible option But I'm afraid that long term will end up drilling a hole in the piston My approach would be more traditional Has a real steam engine wit a double action mécanisme A second additional crankshaft would be added to the front, a valve would be attached tinking of a piston type valve à tube wit One input two output two exhaust the two tube to route the pressure in the engine Huh...

Got it running in steam….. A little….. The nut on the pivot screw/post backs out after a while and it looses its valve plate mating….. Need to come up with a 2-56 lock nut….

Test boiler was a tea kettle with a piece of rubber vacuum line in the whistle port…. Couldn’t make very much pressure due to the weak spring on the spout but good enough test for now….

Next is to come up with a small oil can to make the boiler as was described in the article

Your idea sounds interesting…. Can you sketch up what you are thinking about?

I like the boiler you improvised its super simple I like Thumbs Up

I drew on paper my idea It's drawing too small but we can see how it works Blue indicates the gas exhaust outlet The principle is on the cylinder the Spi is also a pressure release wit The valve is less obvious The principle is when one of the two pressure outlet is blocked, it becomes an escape of engine gases through a hole in the piston which connects to another outlet which is blocked when the piston is in the other position. Let the pressure pass to the motors on one side and the other one after the other

The engine is place on the side To allow water To exit thru the exhaust opening on the engine cylinder

David, Looks complex as you mentioned but also that you put much thought into the design…. I was curious what you planned for exhaust from pressure coming from the crankcase side but I see you have a port in the piston…. I don’t completely understand the design but again looks well thought out and could very well be successful….Thanks for posting the sketch….. Please post any progress when you start the project….
