OK Cub parts wanted
I got a really neat looking OK Cub .074 a few months back but it has a broken rod. I pulled it apart and everything else seems really good. Can anyone help me out with a rod? A fellow up the road does engineering and once told me that if I ever need anything made he's happy to help out. I thought he meant as a favour. When I presented him the engine and said I needed a new rod made he started talking $100++++. Not what I expected. Could be one floating around in someone's spares box, so if there's one out there I can have (cheap), I'd be happy to hear from you.
Cheers.

Re: OK Cub parts wanted
I checked my box of OK Cubs Rod in the loft hoping that I had a partzer that I could send you, but no joy. I have two .074's both look new un-ran, and yes, they are neat looking little engines. Good luck in finding that part.
But I owe you some thanks. A sparrow had come in through the open garage door and got up into the loft flying window to window and leaving a mess. I opened a window and took out the screen and he/she flew out. Otherwise days later I would have had a bigger mess and a dead bird to contend with.

Yo Rod!
I got one if Mark doesn't. Given to me by Tee Bee (Troy), it's missing it's spraybar, but is otherwise complete. Figure he won't mind if I re-gift it for your project.
I'll watch this thread to see how it goes. Figure the trick will be to get it to you without a bunch of money on postage...

Hey Bob, no problems. I forgot to mention to you about the sparrow. Glad you got rid of it without too much damage. They can be pesky & messy, that's for sure.
Mark, "need anything else?" might be a dangerous question. Sure!! Well, let me think & I'll get back to you. I grabbed a huge order from OK Engines before Ted retired, but didn't need the rod at the time, although it wasn't in the catalogue anyway. I'll PM you with my thoughts.
Kim. Considering Mark's offer of possible extras, we might hang off with the parts engine for now until we find out what he has. I guess the cheapest way to get me what I want would be to just pull the rod and stick it in an envelope, 'cos that's really all I need for this engine. If I get a virtually complete engine, I'll just wanna get that one going too, so I'll still be looking for parts.
I can't stand having engines with bits missing- they all deserve a chance to run again.

Thanks Mark. Sounds good. Check your PMs. 049B crankshaft as well if you can spare one. Let me know what you want for them. Should be cheap shipping if we just go for an envelope. (To Australia remember). I know out here it can be considerd a "letter" if it's under 20mm thick. USPS might work the same.

Re: OK Cub parts wanted
*Update* OK Cub parts from Mark arrived today. Piston & rod looks new. Just got to retrieve my engine off the guy who was going to make me a rod (yeah, for $100, not!) so I can make sure it fits. Nice generous bunch of extras shipped out with it as well. A couple of OK Cub heads, one anodized blue, a Red Cub starter spinner, NOS Perfect thimble set and a beautiful clear Tornado 6X4 prop. BONUS!!
Thanks Mark. Sent me all that for no dollars too.

Re: OK Cub parts wanted
Has anybody ever had a Cub .074 that would run any better and produce more power than a mid-level example of a Cub .049 ?
I have two or three that seem to be clean low timers and they only impressed me with their decibel level.

What size prop are you running on it? They should run a little stronger, but not like night and day different.
Re: OK Cub parts wanted
I have run a well used one on a 6X4 & it seemed pretty strong. I know what you mean about the noise.

I've tried a Wen-Mac 6-4 and a Zinger 7-3 woodie.

Re: OK Cub parts wanted
Revisiting an old post of mine, there has been an unfortunate turn of events (some time ago, just havern't mentioned it).
I was thrilled at Mark Boesen's generosity in sending me a piston & rod for my OK Cub .074, along with a few other gifts. I'm not sure if we might have had our engine models mixed up, but when I attempted to fit the "new" piston & rod, I found that the piston was a very tight "pinch" fit in my cylinder. I didn't want to swap pistons on the rods and they can have an awkward press-fit gudgeon (wrist) pin and I didn't want to damage the piston. With a little buffing compound, I thought I would lap the "new" piston to my cylinder and started to twist it in and out using some dowel through the big-end. This was a die-cast rod as opposed to the original steel rod in my engine. Tragically, the small-end bearing just seemed to crumble from around the pin with very little force. I felt really bad at having wrecked the new rod, particularly since Mark was so generous sending it to me. I'm yet to find a replacement, so I'm making a call-out to all my forum friends.
I once again need a Cub .074 rod. This time I'll use a piston that fits.
While we're at it, I got an .049B engine a couple of years back that looked brand new. It had no prop driver, but had a steel flywheel/gear pressed on. I had tried to run it, but with no success. I put it down to the small flywheel. On dismantling the engine I found that the crankshaft wasn't ported for a FRV engine and must have either been an oversight of the machining on assembly or had accidentally received a reed valve engine crank.
So on top of the .074 rod, I also seek an .049B crank and prop driver. Hope someone can help out. (Sorry mark).
The embarrased Rod.

FWIW: The Cub .074 uses the same connecting rod as the first version (lg. case) Cub .049-- Mfg. p/n 609

Re: OK Cub parts wanted
I have 3 .074's. To my surprise, they didn't offer anymore rpm's than a Babe Bee. All of my OK's reside in a bag and I certainly want to use them. I recently came across a vintage plane ( Time Flies ) that was featured in one of my American Modeler mags. It has a OK .19 for power. I think I may give this one a go. It's just that the .19 is so damn loud.
Did Ted Brebeck retire? I wonder what happened to all those parts?

Re: OK Cub parts wanted
Actually a Cub .19 would best be employed as a nostalgia contest free flight engine. Probably still one of the best power to weight ratio engines among .19s and it wouldn't be running very long on each flight. I rather suspect that the rigors of c/l flying would wear one out pretty quickly though.
