Re: The Rocket Arrives !!!!
Speaking of airfoils on the other topic, look closely at the Rocket's wing in the video. It's laminar airfoil actually has it's thickest station at about 2/3rds of the wing's chord.
The Mustang was one of the first warbirds to use this type of airfoil, which is a balance between the lift and induced drag of a high-speed aircraft.

I think they STILL might not have the same amount of bass as that radial !

Well you do got a lot of engines
I still think we should get each member to send in a cox engine until we have one of every product cox ever made and then picture them all together.

Kim,
Cool vid! How was start up? Did you get that nice puff of semi burned oil? That is one of my favorite things in all of aviation. By the way, that second roll looked like it just made the 1500' agl limit. I am jealous.

This radial doesn't have the trademark puff of oil smoke found in so many of the type. Pete still pulled the prop through enough times to cycle each cylinder for detection of hydraulic lock.
I'd become fairly jaded with the new crop of homebuilts. They're nice, but to me, not exciting, nothing I can relate to, and none that I'd care to fly. Once in a while though, and airplane will speak to you. This monster, with it's big engine, and steam-gauge instrument panel stopped me at once. If Pete needed it ferried somewhere, I'd cast off my phobia of flying other people's planes, and crawl right over the mob to get my chance!
Yeah, we were way above the minimum for our little roll...God save us the wrath of the those note-book-packing "Kitty Feds" !!!
I think a blue, Nave scheme and a little imagination would almost get me to my beloved Bearcat. So, a few lottery tickets a week, in trade for a little dreaming.

Re: The Rocket Arrives !!!!
If you work at an airport, sooner or later, you're gonna cross paths with someone who is considered to be a 'celebrity'. With only a few notable exceptions, my particular requirements for this title pretty much exclude the excretions on TV, Movies, and Politics.
What is REALLY cool though, is when a friend suddenly takes the top notch on my scale!
Travis posted this on my Facebook page this morning, and I had an immediate "HEY, I KNOW THAT GUY" moment!!
My bud, Mr. Pete Malone is having his specific Radial Rocket modeled by Sig !!! You could not ask to meet a more straight-across dude than Pete...so this is all doubly cool!
Here is his Rocket from a couple years ago, getting it's "Reno-ising" undone after it's first race there.
Thanks Travis !! Right in the middle of my rant about 'too many projects'...guess I'm now gonna have to go see Edward Jones about scooping out another chunk of my retirement money...

Re: The Rocket Arrives !!!!
Think I owe my bosses at Tailwinds Hobby Center an extra afternoon of work after my on-the-job performance this past Wednesday.
I arrived at work only to find my new Radial Rocket waiting for me!
Possibly from kindness, possibly from fear of having her computer inventory massacred by a distracted redneck, my boss Patty told me to just go ahead and open up the big box, and scotch-tape the Rocket together for some photos.
Gonna go through the same routine as with the Kadet Senior Sport---sealing up the firewall and wing saddle area to hold off contamination from the oil slinging engine.
The one qualm I have with the model is it's landing gear. In order to stay with the full-scale appearance, it's gear struts are rigidly mounted to the wing, with only the plastic-like tire providing any shock absorption. Figure this big dog ain't gonna be flying out of the Skunk Works front yard strip, but taken over to Cairo's airport or down to Al's private field.
The Rocket is probably gonna get the O.S. 1.20 that's currently bolted to my Mud Duck...bought the best I can come to replicating the full-scale Rocket's Motorstar radial engine.
If Sig/Seagulls Models decide to reproduce Pete's 'Other Ride', I'll be having to seek additional employment along with my part-time gig at Tailwinds Hobby Center to salvage my budget....

Holy Moley!
That is one bad plane. Looks like some 3D action is in your future. I assume it's an ARF, does it need to be gone through? Or do they fly well enough out of the box?
That would be one neat video with a camera on the nose.

Re: The Rocket Arrives !!!!
Thanks guys!
The wingspan is just over 62 inches, with a 45 inch-long fuselage. It's gonna be 'catered-to" model in that it'll have to operate from a smooth surface that's also big enough for me to hit as I get used it's glide/approach speeds.
I'm gonna do the same mods I did to the Kadet Sport: Double the firewall to strengthen the front end AND cover the various holes for the fuel tank head and electric power wires. Most of these ARF have the fuel tank protruding through the firewall, which always seems to leak eventually, and is almost like having a funnel dumping oil inside the airframe. May also epoxy some gussets inside.
The scale control surfaces will probably not let me 3-D it...as if I had the skills to do that to begin with! It's gonna spend it's life smoking low across the ground, and pulling 300 foot loops and such.
Gonna get Pete to pose with it in front of his full-size Rocket, and also get his autograph on the model!

Re: The Rocket Arrives !!!!
Hi Kim, That is a superb airplane. Congratulations with the purchase. Scientific sells the kit in France. Apparently, Seagull is making a 2nd Rocket with a smaller wingspan, 1410 mm or 55,5".

Kim, that is one really cool looking airplane. You must have a ton of "will power" not to buy everything the store where you work . !! Can't wait to see the signed version take flight.
