Cox Engine of The Month
What I want most of all in Cox
What I want most of all in Cox
Bernie, Matt... the Purple engine feeler almost forced me to hijack that thread
below is a semi rant that is NOT intended to say I do NOT like both of your efforts to keep us in the Cox world with good stuff
As you guys know, many of us here have bought and loved many of your "unique" "special" engines and no doubt many of us will continue to support you guys and buy more.
I do get it about cost effectiveness of many of the bits n parts we all have asked for responding to your various what if we carried this n that question seem to be unobtinium
OK that all said, I will get to the point....
I am tired of bidding on old questionable engines just to obtain a METAL back plate
I dare not run any of my "specialty" engines as way too many of my Plastic back plate engines have one or more of these faults:
Kick Back while starting breaks an ear
Impact with ground with durable propeller breaks an ear
Must use LockTite and RTV... AND pay very close attention to tank back bolt torque or air leak is guaranteed if under or over torqued
Plastic Tank Back significantly limits future trade or sale of "specialty engines" to any users...collectors may be interested, but folks that want to run or fly the hopped up cool looking engine should and most likely will take pause
I like the Purple engine BUT what I really need is a reasonably priced source of Stunt and non Stunt METAL tank backs... The plastic ones have me seriously considering liquidating all reed .049s and concentrating on TD and Medallions
Just my .02c
And yes Virginia I am prepared for all the notes telling me XXX owner has successfully used Plastic tank back reed valve Coxs for decades with zero problems...
I get that but hesitate to even fire up and properly break in my very very cool Xmas Bee, Extreme, Blue Bullet or Terminator for fear of my personal experiences listed above
Just for reference I have run the pee out of my Valentine RR .049 (that was less expensive) and it is about ready to mount to the front on a RC scalpel
Did I mention that I love doing business with Matt and Bernie..I do, they are first rate and I highly recommend them, their business, and all their products....

Re: What I want most of all in Cox
The problem with the zinc backplates is that they require a mould. Probably in the $20,000 to $30,000 range. Even if one initially ran 5,000 pieces, $6 would be for mould amortization. Add $1 for the spraybar, $1 for assembly and $2 to make the part and one ends up with a $20 retail piece and $50,000 of capital sitting in a box.

Bernie Brother, I get it.... You have been patient enough to explain the economics of it plenty of times
just ranting as an old man
Waiting for the PM claiming to have 150 old Baby bee with metal backs for $100.00... go figure
in fact I hope most of the e-bay sellers do NOT see my rant or the cost of metal backed engines will soar

Fred,
I agree the metal backplates would be a huge plus. I have many bees, but have largely given up on them as they suck for spirited flying. Even if you take care of the air leaks they still cut out at the worst times. They are great for roundy round and speed though. I am a TD/Medallion guy anymore. If you plan on doing 1/2A stunt/combat then TD's are the way to go.
Not directing the Bee slander at Bernie or Matt. It's a design flaw that has been a problem since conception.

I agree. I love the reed valve engines, but I am moving more toward using external tanks with them too. They just seem to run more consistently and have less problems than the integral tank. I don't recall the last time I flew with a plastic backplate. I guess I have enough metal ones I don't need to use the plastic.

Re: What I want most of all in Cox
I gave up on tanked engines a while ago. The only reed valves I run are horseshoe style backplates set up for a bladder. The airplane doesn't care where it's pointed it just keeps screaming. I've also had good luck drilling a hole in a Bee type tank and running a line to an external tank though some might consider that sacrilege!
What I would like to see someone manufacture are the white nylon tornado style props. If I find those I treat them like they are made of gold!

What is it about the white nylon props you like so much? I thought the white nylon props did not hold up very well.JPvelo wrote:I gave up on tanked engines a while ago. Re: What I want most of all in Cox
At the risk of a hijack I have a white Tornado prop on my Baby Clown. And if you have seen the horrible things I have done to it you would be a believer. I have probably crashed 5 or 6 times since I installed it and a couple of those were full bore nose in style. Nary a scratch on the prop.

Re: What I want most of all in Cox
I have a whole sack full of new white Tornadoes. They are more flexible than Rubber Duckies. I put one on one day and realized it was a reverse pitched prop. Anyone with a reedy can fly it.
So, who wants them?

Re: What I want most of all in Cox
I'd love to relieve you of a few. Say, 2 x right hand and 2 x left hand. I'll pm you. S'pose I should ask what diameter/pitch they are.RknRusty wrote:I have a whole sack full of new white Tornadoes. Re: What I want most of all in Cox
Sounds like Rusty was saying he had a box (Six,or Ten, or Twelve) of White Tornadoes that were ALL clockwise pitched...I bet they are 6x3s
My logic is...he runs mostly TD and the reversed pitched are of little use to him
Since we morphed into an "I wish" thread ( and that is perfectly OK with me)
I would love to have a few of the clear props just for display and photo use

Actually if you go back a few posts you'll see that he has at least 1 of them.

Re: What I want most of all in Cox
I made my assumptions (Rusty will set us straight soon) based on his question "So,who wants them?"
Seems to me he has a "whole sack full of new white Tornadoes" free for the asking
