2015 bucket list - I made it!!
Well, I made it. I set a goal to repair my favorite glider last flown in 2012 when my brother - in - law was here from Finland and we hiked up a local hill a few miles from here. I had crashed the plane and let it sit waiting for me to repair the broken nose for almost 3 years. After my hip replacement I made a goal to repair the nose of the plane and hike up the hill again and fly no matter what the weather. Well, as usual I couldn't find the broken nose piece so I had to build one from scratch. Finally I completed the piece and recovered it with monokote, set up a new 2.4 GHz receiver and servos and a second backup plane made from the Cox foam wings. This was the travelling plane I used during the early 1980's when I worked for General Dynamics-Electronics up the Coast at Point Mugu and surrounding area, including Vandenberg AFB where we had one of our antennas located. The Cox foam wing fit in a small box inside my suitcase and was rugged.
Anyway I made it up the hill, about 300 feet above ground level, and flew both planes in the gusty winds.
Here is the path up the hill
Rancho Bernardo, California December 30, 2015
here is the halfway point
Halfway up the hill, the flying area in sight/
here is what I carried up the hill
2 fuselages, 2 wings, 2 transmitters, extra batteries, rubber bands, screwdrivers, etc.
I did it!

Heck of a job!
I am glad you were able to achieve your goal after many trials and a long wait! I also hope you enjoyed the flying!

Great accomplishment after the knee surgery!! My wife loves to hike the Koko head trail but I can't hike with her because of a bad knee.
The hard part is coming down on those railroad ties. ( I think it was originally built to bring supplies to the top of the crater during WW2.)
Congrats Happierdad!

thanks. My dad worked at Edwards AFB and associated airfields during the 1950's and 60's with Convair which later became General Dynamics - Convair. He worked in the developmental aircraft group.

Thanks again coxaddict, but it was #1 hip out of 2 bad hips. I still need to replace the right hip, hopefully this Summer.
And I wear a knee brace for knee pain radiated from the hip.
p.s. did you ever try riding down the rails on anything?

Thanks Kim. With all the Quadcopter experience I have been getting, maybe I will take one of the cameras and tape it to the wing or something to get some video. My brand new Syma X5C-1 Quad had a bad camera, out of focus, so they are refunding part of the cost so I can buy another camera. The seller doesn't sell parts just the entire Quadcopter.

Your dad was here during an amazing time. Lots of aircraft manufacturers and a ramp filled with incredible aircraft.happydad wrote:xplaneguy wrote:Congrats...nice job!

Yup, Somewhere I have pictures of some of the "planes" he worked on. Back at Convair in San Diego he worked on the Sea Dart, water take off, and the Pogo stick, vertical take off, planes. Both failures. He also worked on the Convair 440 prop plane and the Convair 880 the jet engine plane similar to the Boeing 707. I travelled several times from Point Mugu to San Nicholas Island, then a Naval Test Facility and now a preserve for sea mammals and North Island Naval Air Station to San Clemente Island on the Convair 440.
I actually worked for General Dynamics - Electronics for 11 years and worked up at Point Mugu, California for 4 1/2 years installing a system to track Navy aircraft in their flight test area at sea. Soon after the system was installed and "sold off" to the Navy it was outdated by the GPS satellite system.
