Re: starting a sure start
Sorry to interrupt your carburetor fight but I got the sure start to run! I went down to the local animal hospital to get a syringe so I don't have to take the glow plug off all the time. I removed the spring starter and after playing around with the needle, I got it to run. It only wanted to run backwards, no matter what way i turned it to start it but I'm happy because I did get it to run! Thank your for the help! Phil

Re: starting a sure start
ok, so i don't get looked at the wrong way again, i'm now going to referr to carburetors/restrictors/whatever you want to call it
as FAMT (Fuel/Air mixing thingy). so now i can't possibly offend anyone (unless someone has a family member named famt )

Thingy is inaccurate. It's supposed to be called a thingamajig.
Our first forum fight, wasn't that cute. And I started it. Sorry about that. And I agree, it is a carb, of course, I just nit-picked specifics and commonly accepted esoterica.
Good work, G-Money. Don't run it backwards on the test block too long. It might overheat without air blowing over it. You can get one of those one way spring starters that will kick it off the right way every time. Purists don't approve because it causes a slight bit of drag on the RPM. Makes things easy though.

Re: starting a sure start
I put the spring starter back on it and I got it to run the correct way. I don't know much about engines so I can't comment on your carb fight. Thank you! Phil

oh come on, that wasn't a real fight, that was a mere active discussionRknRusty wrote:Thingy is inaccurate. It's supposed to be called a thingamajig.

Phil,
I don't believe that anyone was fighting. We learn most of this stuff from folks around us, even incorrect slang. Some of us are so ancient we remember when a throttle was a two speed device consisting of a two needle valve setup to provide a rich low speed, a baffle with a hole in it that covered the intake also for a rich setting, or a device over the exhaust for back pressure to provide low speeds...very primative by today's standards, but quite innovative for the day.
One word of caution, you mentioned earlier that you were removing the glow plug to prime the engine. By doing so you are "work hardening" the copper gasket (or shim) between the glow head and the cylinder. Eventually it will not seal correctly. Some guys even replace the shim every time they remove the glow head. I'm not that picky, but I keep head removal to a minimum.
There are two types of spring starters...the type that engages a plastic piece behind the prop (like you have) and an older type that you physically had to move to engage the prop. If the spring bouncing against the plastic bothers you, you can either remove it or replace it with the older type.
Good luck with your Sure Start.
George
Edit: Forgot to mention...many years ago (~1955) it was common practice to prime a 1/2A engine with an eye dropper, so you might consider that as a PLAN B.
