Cox Engine of The Month

Brand New From Parts TeeDee .049
I always wanted to build a TeeDee .049
from parts, but could never find a new
case or crank. I finally found a case at
Penn Valley Hobby Center, and filled it
with one of Matt's(EX Model Engines) new
cranks. Capped it with one of Bernies(Cox
International) backplates and I was on my way.
Added a nos piston/cylinder that is stamped
"4" on one of the ports. It has one boost per
bypass. New head, collet and carb body from
Matt and it's all new. One exception is the
needle valve assembly which is a 128tpi
fine thread job that dates back to Dale Kirn
I think. Something different.
I polished most of it and cleaned with my
small sonicator as I went along.
This is what I ended up with. This engine
may suffer from an identity crisis, having never
been in a plastic case, blister pack or box.
One hitch was the case which I think is
refered to as a short case. There is no
raised ridge for the crank disc to ride on
and the case length made the crank pin hit
the backplate. I swapped the crank and
backplate into another engine and no problem,
so I made a gasket for the backplate by cutting
the ears off a reedy case gasket and coaxing
it onto the plate. Worked well.
Hope to put on the stand and break her in
next weekend.
Sorry for all the blather, just thought
some of you might be amused.
You might ask, why would you do that?
I don't know, but it's been fun so far.

Good job Bob!
Very neat working from parts. I have some NIP TD NV assy's I'll trade you one for the KK. Just a suggestion.
Again it looks real good.

I'm flush with Cox needle assemblies, but I have a black KK assembly for you Ron.
Send me your new address and it's yours.

I know exactly why you did it. It's beautiful. I want to build or buy a new Tee Dee one of these days. For a person with limited cash flow, building is the perfect option. Who cares what the total cost is if it only cost a few bucks here and there over time. It's the finest machine Cox ever made.dckrsn wrote:...You might ask, why would you do that?

Re: Brand New From Parts TeeDee .049
I wouldn't ask, "Why do that?" It's a lot of fun to build an engine from scratch, and yours looks great. I bought a worn out TD on ebay and it was a dog. Someone who knew engines had been running it on pressure with KK Needle valve, and it had been used pretty hard. It took awhile to clean up, and I had to replace the backplate, carb cover, piston, cylinder, head, and needle valve assembly. It probably would have been cheaper to buy a new one, but not as fun. I ran it for the first time about three weeks ago. Runs like a charm. Anyway, if I weren't refurbishing engines, I would probably be drinking or some other unhealthy thing:) Your engine looks great. Thanks for sharing. Andy
