Cox Banana 049

Cox Banana 049
Being a new member I would first I would like to say hello to everyone and introduce myself. My name is Tom and I've been collecting Cox
engines and vehicles for years. I found this site while looking for information on the Cox Banana 049. The page in the Cox Engine Collection
site contains all the info I could find via my web search. Here is a link to that page:
http://sites.google.com/site/coxenginecollection/banana-049
I was happy to find this site. Liked what I saw so thought I would register. I'm looking forward to learning more about Cox engines here and
hope to be able to contribute as well.
I started researching the Banana 049 because I just purchased one on eBay. It was the first one I have ever seen listed there and I felt
very lucky to have hit the Buy It Now before someone else did. Much to my surprise I checked the sellers completed listings and
found that he had listed his Banana the week before with the same $40 BIN. It ran for 7 days and no one bought it! So, he relisted it.
I bought it 3 minutes after the listing posted. It was just coincidence that I searched "cox engine" right after the listing posted.
To have missed the previous listing me and my fellow collectors were obviously not paying attention! I would have paid the $40 asking
price for the box alone! Here is a link to the eBay listing:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=230642628068&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT
I first learned of the Banana when reading my copy of the Cox Model Engine Handbook. The following is quoted from it:
Cox #250
ECJ #144
1989
Very much like Product engine ECJ #71
but with spring starter, red spinner and
fuel tubing extended below plastic mount.
Also included in the box is a brush, presumably
to clean off accumulated desert dust.
The entry also has a photo. The engine in the photo has an unfinished case.
The engine I purchased also has an unfinished case. As those shown in this sites collection
have black cases they must have been produced with both finishes. So, if you are a hard
core collector you need to get both versions!
I find it interesting that the Banana 049 boxes have no product numbers while the Cox Model Engine Handbook
gives a product number of 250. I know Dan Sitter did a great deal of research through original Cox documents
so he probably got the number there and for some reason Cox decided not to apply the number to the boxes.

Re: Cox Banana 049
Very neat. That's cool that you found one! The one I have on my site is just one I picked up at swap meet. I was only told then that it was a "Banana .049". I didn't know if I should believe him as I have never heard of a "Banana .049" at that time. When I got home with it, to my surprise, I found one on eBay! I didn't buy the one on eBay as it went for something like $150 with like 20+ bids. The only plain crankcase Banana .049 I seen was on a Haifa Banana model plane that was on some guys site. Do you mind if I put a link to this post on the "https://sites.google.com/site/coxenginecollection/banana-049" page along with the product number and date? -Jacob
By the way, Welcome to the forum!

Re: Cox Banana 049
How did I miss that I've been looking for a Banana .049 for the best part of 2 years and recently in the uk I saw a killer bee go for £3 and that's only like $4.50 I was in an area with no cell reception so missed out on it
Re: Cox Banana 049
This is one engine I think you can justify keeping In tHe box although I might run I if I hade it.
Re: Cox Banana 049
Thanks for the replies everyone. I'm happy to be here!
The Banana 049 arrived in the mail today. It is brand new just
as the seller described it. The box is in much better shape than
the listings photos made me think it would be. I'm very happy
with it. I was not expecting it to have an instruction sheet written
in, I'm guessing, Hebrew. It is definitely some sort of Arabic
language. Also in the box are a Haifa business card, Cox stickers
and wrenches.
Didn't find the brush as described in the Cox Engine Handbook.
I'll get some photos posted later.
Jacob, feel free to post the link to this thread in your collection pages.
I'm pleased to be able to contribute.
The box for the Banana I received does not have the plain brown cardboard
piece that is usually under the insert card the engine is tied to. Did your
Banana box have one? This is usually where you find a date for
engines packed in this type box.

Re: Cox Banana 049
Tom,
Yes, it is an engine from Israel. I am not sure of the exact relationship, but it was a version special to Israel and that part of the world.
The company is Tissan Haifa. They are importers and distributors of various model airplane items. They also do some manufacturing work. I do believe the parts were made by Cox in the USA however.
Congrats of the engine meeting your expectations!
Matt.

Re: Cox Banana 049
Thank you. That's great that it came! I purchased my engine without a box. I got it from a swap meet. The old guy who was selling it to me told me that it was a "Banana .049". At that time I have never heard of that such engine. I thought it was just a product engine (which it somewhat is) or just a Black Widow with a backplate instead of a tank. When I got home with it, I typed "Cox Banana .049" into Google and a listing for one on eBay popped up. The picture of the one in the box on my page is the one I saw on eBay. If you do type "Cox Banana .049" in to Google today, besides getting this forum post and my page, there is some other forums and sites that have pictures of the plane with the engine on it. That would be great if you can get some more pictures of the engine. Thanks -Jacob
