Li'l Satan video
Here is a video of me flying my new Li'l Satan today. It was clear and fairly calm, a great day to fly.
I recommend clicking up to full screen because it's hard to follow on the small YouTube player.
Now, for your viewing pleasure, here it is:

'95 Black Widow. There were a couple of times it was a little ragged, but I think maybe Bees just aren't happy with quite so much sloshing, but in general I'm happy with my BWs. For some reason the one on my Li'l Jumpin Bean runs a lot faster. I may swap those two.warrenlead wrote:Sounds pretty good. What engine?

Just curious, what was the line length used in the vid? I'd say 30 feet.
Nice flyer!
Thanks,

Nice flyer!
Thanks,
I think it should do tighter loops. I added some elevator throw but that didn't help. After a point the elev just stalls. After my maiden voyage the front weight was lost. I may have put too much on it this time. I also went down from a 6x3 prop to a 5-1/4x3. I changed too many things at once. I need to go back and change one thing at a time. I'm getting the hang of it though, it's a pretty quick little plane. When I get it all trimmed out I'll do some more video, hopefully with a person at the camera rather than just setting it on a 6" tripod.

plane
Good for you and plane looks good. Now you need to do more inside loops and eights. Verticals are fun. Anyway glad its going well. You must have good neighbors or is all that your lot?

Re: Li'l Satan video
Thanks Dankar. I did a bunch of insides, a couple of outsides and one group of 8s, but it was hard to see. It actually flew better last week. I was concerned the loops were too wide so I tinkered and over-trimmed it. I did the ultimate wrong thing by changing a few things at once.
First I added some elevator throw, it only had 20 degrees up and maybe less down, so I hooked the wire into the upper hole in the horn. That may have helped, it didn't feel like it was stalling. Somehow the front weight was missing since the maiden and I think I put too much back on it. The c/g on the plans is 7/8" from the LE on a 5-7/16 chord(16%). I've been adding weight to get it to hang there slightly nose down. But with no weight at all, 1" (1/8" farther back)from the LE balances perfectly. Yesterday I had 10 grams zipped to the crankcase to get it where the plans said it should be. Also I changed from a 6x3 prop for the maiden to a 5-1/4x3.
Next time I fly, I'm going to try it with no nose weight, and leave the prop and elevator the same. If it's too much elevator I'm confident I can hang on till the test flight is over.
I got my decals today, I'm going to put them on tonight.
That lot is a church courtyard across the street from my house. As long as they aren't doing church stuff and daycare is out, they are okay with me flying. I've been flying for 25 years over there. I can't use over 35' lines or I'll trim the oak trees on the border. I have actually done it a couple of times.

Re: Li'l Satan video
Hi Rusty, back in HS days we flew on a portion of the school grounds after school, weekends, etc. Back then no one complained. The area had a stone building (no windows) on one side and a row of trees on the other. Only one problem, it was a ‘wee’ bit shy for 60’ lines which I was using at the time. Hey, no problem, plenty of room for take-off and then just fly over the trees! I was a teenager and bullet proof. No problem right? Right, until the day that I snagged the lines about a foot inboard of the wing on the top tip of a tree. Wow, that sucker wound up like a top quicker than you could blink. Oddly enough the plane wasn’t damaged, just the matter of getting it down.RknRusty wrote:That lot is a church courtyard across the street from my house. As I always say, safety first, never ever fly in an area without plenty of room for margin .

Re: Li'l Satan video
Okay I got it trimmed nicely. But my engine was running badly today. Strange, it ran fine Sunday, same fuel, same everything. Maybe something got into the tank and clogged it. I hate to take it apart because this one has to be sealed together with Permatex black to keep it from leaking.
But, it flew beautifully the one time I got some performance out of it. I removed all nose weight and the C/G only moved back 1/8".
The video isn't much but it's better than nothing, so here it is, once again in glorious Hi Def. for your viewing pleasure :

Sounds like the pickup tube could have come loose.
