Black Widow RPM
Hello Everyone,
I'm curious to see what other Black Widows are producing in RPM'z.. I've had 3 that consistently ran at 21000ish on 30%. I think one had a slightly modified backplate..
edit: I forgot to mention I was using a Tornado 5x4 cut down to 4.75... sorry
also... 30%nitro is what I've always run my engines on. I don't recall burning out that many glo-plugs..

Re: Black Widow RPM
17500 is about average.
what your getting is just under what a good tee dee .049 will do.

Re: Black Widow RPM
yikes, i would thin out the nitro content there, partner!
thhat's more than cox used in their highest percent fuel.
if you continue running em like that, you're gonna burn out your
glow heads really quick, due to the very high running temperature. (more nitro = more heat = more powah)
but yes, its usually around 17000 rpms. even with 12%.

Re: Black Widow RPM
umm...i beleive racing power was 25...even if not, racing power was only used for real speed oriented rat racing.

@ neednitro:
if you want to further boost performance, play around with the reeds. there are
many different materials to choose from, and if you want, you can make your own too!

Re: Black Widow RPM
Mr Beez,
Do you have any suggestions for reed material?
I was thinking of making a flapper style reed intake for the little engines.. using a stainless steel reed...

I do I reccomend Teflon or thin copper 0.001 inch.
SD I did not edit your post so feel free to post it it must be funny.
Re: Black Widow RPM
Race Power was 30% Nitro, 18% castor, 2% Klotz and the rest methanol. I have copies of the original cox fuel formula sheets to prove it.
BTW Running a reedy with a standard crank in it at over 20,000 rpm for too long might cause the crankshaft to fail. This was why they needed the killer cranks.

Re: Black Widow RPM
We have a topic in For Sale/Wanted about fuel mixing sheets so if you want to check those out, just scroll down a bit. http://coxengineforum.forumakers.com/t258-fuel-mixing-sheets
Re: Black Widow RPM
its just my thing, but i solely use copper star. they offer adequate performance while being more durable than mylar.NeedNitro wrote:Mr Beez,

Re: Black Widow RPM
Getting about the same RPMS out of my widows also with the teflon reed, 17,5-ish.
I was shorted some fuel out of a quart can of regular Cox fuel at my LHS many years ago. Apparently he had used some of the quart and put it back on the shelf for resale by accident. I took the can back to show him and remember him topping it off for me with some 1/2A? glow fuel called "Missle mist".
What was the nitro content of a full can of that stuff??. The cox engine I had at the time seemed to run MUCH better after he topped off the can. He put about 1/3 of a quart of Missle mist back into my can.

This is the aforementioned RPM comment:
RPM's are everything! - Ignoramus - 2011AD
Now isn't that "knee-slappin'" funny? Of course you have to understand the word: Ignoramus (a stupid person)

I remember it also smelled sweet. Maybe the first to use synthetic or just had their own scent they added? Was it K&B that made it?

would they do that?
Re: Black Widow RPM
Who knows I'm just guessing. I have been searching "missle mist" and along with lots of cool military pictures, I've been able to find articles on it. Duke Fox made the formula

Yes. I see it is still offered but many articles mention it not being the same as it was years ago. Maybe it had that propo in it.

Re: Black Widow RPM
we had missle mist every so often when we were able to get to the hobby shop back in the day, it was 24%nitro... we also had to ride our bikes 7 or so miles (one way) to get fuel and props... we'd get alot of looks riding back with a gallon of fuel propped on our seat and a bag of "FRESH" topflite 6x3's in our hand... those were the days....
and the fuel did smell kinda sweet...

I have memories like that.....
The times when every boy carried a pocket knife not for "protection" or "street cred" but because that's what boys did we would go out and make, wittle and carve things all afternoon/weekend long and it was normal now kids can't even play I the street I tell you if a kid walked home with even a pint of glowfuel they would be arrested. Look at the state of the western world.
